Post subject:  CRD Weight and Lift Kits

Looking around on Jeep's website today and I was looking at the base curb weight. They have the base curb weight listed as 4033 lbs. for all Sport editions, including the CRD. So why does everyone say the CRD weighs so much more that a full suspension wouldn't work and only a spacer lift is good for it??

Just wondering.

Brent

Edit: I just looked on allpar.com and the CRD is only something like 180 lbs heavier than the 3.7L V6. Is that so much more weight that say a full suspension kit from Rusty's and similar kits couldn't handle it??

Yes, I wonder the same thing. The entire CRD model only weighs about 200 lbs. more than a V6 model. You figure 150 lbs. of that might be engine, and 50 lbs. is the heavier duty transmission. So basically you've got the weight of ONE extra person on the CRD over the V6...does that REALLY make so much difference that a V6 lift kit won't work??

I have a REAL hard time believing it. But that's what all the guys are saying. Who wants to be a ginea pig and find out for us? :?

I have also had a hard time understanding this, especially because people add bull bars and winches to the front of their V6.

Guys, I posted this awhile back and nobody seemed to care. It seems pretty relevant here though...

I think with heavy duty springs you'd probably be fine as long as you don't add bumpers and a winch. That's just me though...

I keep hearing about this weight problem with the crd and i can tell you that Rusty's coil lift is working awesome on my cousins crd (pic) he has had it on almost a year now, no sag, no major rub( some light rubbing when in reverse and turning) he did smash down the pinchweld and trimmed a black plastic strip under front bumper(spolier?) i belive if he had different tires then the mtr's there would be no rub at all. we did do a clevis lift also. the ride quality in his crd is much much better than my stock kj! he has done alot of hard off roading in his crd(you should see his dents&scratches) if you install this lift and it rubs to much---go on a diet!

Sounds good to me. I've read good and bad on both spacer lifts and suspension lifts, I guess it all depends on what kind of money you're willing to spend on a lift.

Bringing back an old one here but I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with Rusty and he assured me that his lift will work fine on a CRD. He has sold many of them without any complaints the gas and diesel versions weight barely any difference at the front wheels I am told.

The CRD model is 300 lbs. heavier than the V6 model. I'd say at least 50 lbs. of this, if not more, is in the heavier-duty 545RFE transmission. So the CRD is only 200-250 lbs. heavier in the front end. Not a significant different at all...but enough to notice it. I think the lift kits on the market will work...but you probably won't get as much lift as you would on a V6 model because the springs will be compressed more in the front.

I'd say it partially works. As provided in this thread, it's being used on a CRD but a clevis lift was also needed to eliminate the extra sag. The gassers don't need to do that(at least, not right away). There's a guy in the 4x4 section, BJ'naKJ(that userid cracks me up - he must not be married yet   ), that is getting the Rockfather II installed very soon and will report back. It uses the HD OME springs up front, OME struts, and a small spacer of some type - can't remember right now. He said he would report back when he's done testing it to see how it rides...

I already ordered the OME HD's for the rear so I am thinking that the rusty's front springs would work good with them. if the rear is low I will add a packer. Rusty told me they would work fine so now I just need to decide If I want to just run the stock strut for now.

I did receive most of the kit this week, but the new OME struts are back ordered until at least next week. I may start the disassembly this weekend and put in the rear springs and shocks.

We married guys still have some fun now and again. But honestly BJ are initials. This userid isn't as bad as what I used to use: nuclearBJ because of my line of work. I got some strange inquires with that one.

If you look at the OME/ARB catalog, there is no recommended heavy spring for the CRD. The medium CRD spring is the heavy gas spring.
All J tried the OME springs on the CRD and didn't like the set up, I can't imagine them recommending the Daystar spacer front if they didn't feel it was a positive move.

Use the stock springs, the Daystar 1.5 inch puck, OME HD front struts and Rocky Road strut top plate 3/8inch on the front of your CRD - especially if you have a bull bar.

This is what I have and its great - I did a lot of research before going this way and tried the OME springs by themselves - they sagged back to the stock height (I have an ARB bar) before long.

The set up I have produces 3/4 inch or so less lift than the Frankenlift for CRD - but in my opinion looks better as the front doesn't end up higher than the rear with just the OME rear springs in the rear.

It'll give you at least two inches of extra lift on the front, a little more if you don't have the ARB bar. Its also produces less strain on your CV's because the angles aren't as big.

Don't use Rancho front struts on your CRD, they are too soft.

I just ordered the Daystar stuff from Quinn, Do you think I can go cheap and run the stock front struts for now? I just can't swing an extra $260.00 right now for the OME struts.......

I'd do it all at once, the OME struts were a major component in getting the good ride quality I have now, as I changed from the Rancho to the OME. The OME's control the front end way better than the Ranchos. I'd imagine the stock ones are no where near the quality of the OME's either.

If you do it later you have to pay someone again to rip it all out and replace the struts - which will probably cost you half the value of the OME struts if you buy them now. So what is a $260 exercise now, becomes a $390 exercise later.

I really wanted the OME's but decided I would just at least get the Rancho's for now...... now you got me thinking, It is nice to do it once and be done with it. Does anyone else have feedback on the rancho's with a 2.5" daystar in a CRD?

if you get the ranchos you'll be disappointed, I could easily bottom out the stock springs with the Ranchos on mine, but its much harder (if at all) to do with the OME's - much better for off-roading.

Looks like my credit card is going to get a $260.00 charge on it for some OME's.....Thanks for the input.
