| Post subject: | Hard shift at low speed |
Well as with most of us it's a love-hate thing with the CRD. Fortunately mine is a lot more love. Had a nice few "glitches" when I first got it a year ago. EGR valve, then something else related or attached to that (can't quite remember now), cracked coolant hose. Knock on wood, but my EGR valve was replaced at about 10K KMs (~6K miles) and I've been good since, 25K KMs (~15000miles). The only quirk I have now is occasionaly if I'm moving along at a slow speed, say if you were trying to find a house and you were driving slow enough to look at the numbers, 10-12mph, when it changes gear it's a pretty hard shift. THUMP THUMP with a hesitation between thumps. Almost like it was a manual shift and I didn't have a clue how to drive a stick. Again it only happens at slow speeds and not all the time. Any ideas? Something I should expect to fail? Just the nature of the tranny? As a side note...I got about 575km (~370miles) to my last tank of fuel without any additive. That's probably 30% highway and 70% stop and go city driving. Am I about on par with the mileage I should be expecting to get? Thanks!! |

When the tranny is hot put it through a sequence of being in drive and being in reverse then parking brake and in park on flat surface. Keep the engine running for a few minutes then check the level. I had similar issues when my ATF+4 fluid was low. |

Mine is very similiar, not always, but at low speeds it lunges when it shifts to second. I ASSume it might be a product of the gap in ratio (1st is pretty low in this tranny) and the high torque at low RPM of the CRD. I have not checked my tranny fluid, but recently had a TSB perfromed that was basically a tranny service with installation of the "new" filters that dont leak backwards. Still have not convinced them to put the new pump in the tranny. 13K left on warranty.... |

Many have had issues with dealers not puttig in the correct amount of ATF+4 in after service. |

I have had it too, just a few times. I think it has happened to me in a down shift when I have been accellerating a little then take my foot off the throttle while traveling in the normal speed shift range. I think it is a Jeep thing. |

It may be related to the TCM "learning" your driving style. I've noticed a harder downshifts after driving hard.....,85 through the mountins....then slow down for fuel, food, traffic, and etc. The hard shifting goes away after driving around town for a bit. |

I think 400 or a little over 400 miles to the tank is the norm as far as Fuel goes... 370 isnt too bad, but should be closer to 400 |

My CRD shifts hard like that all the time. My transmission fluid is slightly over filled though. |

I have a hard shift at around 35 mph periodically. I have noticed that it usually only happens when it is cooler outside. Now that it is getting to be in the lower 60s and 50s at night, it is happening more and more. Haven't had it all summer. Same thing happened last fall too. Strange. |

mine was doing this also. When I got my new turbo in last week I had the dealer do the diff fluids front and rear. Now its not doing it, so I'm thinking that the rear diff was low on fluid and giving me the hard shift |

Thanks for all the replies!! I just got mine back today after have front/rear diff fluids changed. A painful $275CDN later. Hasn't done it so far...hopefully it holds up that way. Annoying vibration in the dash at exactly 2000RPM though. Been like it for a while. Sounds like a loose clip or something along those lines. |
