Maybe its just me, but has anyone noticed a drop in mileage around 6000 miles on your oil? I use Shell Rotella-T and change it at the 6,275 interval or whichever the lower one is in the EVIC and lately I've noticed a drop in mileage below my "normal" winter average. I was getting around 19 with winter fuel and 4oz of Howes in the tank, now I'm getting around 16-17 with the oil being older than the service interval. Also, I have noticed the engine idling and running a bit louder with the old oil but that I consider normal due to oil age and me noticing that previously. Just wanted to see if anybody had any ideas.

I'd first check up on the MAP sensor. Those are notorious for becoming dirty and it will improve MPG if you clean it.

If your oil makes your MPG drop, I suggest you change it ASAP! There has to be a big difference in the lubricating properties of the oil for it to affect MPGs.

As an example I changed from a mineral 15w-40 oil to a full synthetic 5w-40 oil in my Patrol and got 2-3 MPG more. That's from a terribly cheap neas-as-makes-no-difference no-name 15w-40 to a Mobil 1 Synt-S 5w-40 oil!

I've used Rotella synthetic 1996 in my Passat TDI then my 99.5 jetta and to answere your question YES  Even though the TDI's had a 10K change interval I started changing at 6K.

I have cleaned the MAP sensor the last two oil changes and plan to do it with each oil change. Although it is gunked up I do not notice any change in mileage after cleaning which is the exact opposite as everyone says so I do not think the MAP sensor has anything to do with it. I will be changing it this weekend but just was seeing what everyone else thought of my experience.

Thanks,

When I got my CRD I ran 5w-40 Amsoil full syn. I was losing a quart about every 2-3k. The dealer told me to change it to 0w-40 Mobil 1 and it would correct itself. I did and have to add maybe a 1/2 quart during the 10-12k intervals. I have never cleaned my MAP and I get great mpg...should I clean it? Is it just that thing on the other side of the air filter intake? I change my airfilter every 15k and it is pretty nasty but not horrible. I have also had 2 EGRs replaced under warranty, not sure if they clean the system out when they do that or not. jUst changed the fuel filter at 35k as well....now I need 4 new sneakers and I will be all set for a while(I hope).
