Post subject:  programming computer--- How?

Ok, I've now got an EVIC from a Jeep Liberty, and it powered up and showed me the tire pressures when I first turned it on. It hasn't shown me the pressures since. I can't seem to figure out how to get it to show me the pressures again, as it does not appear in any of the "Menu" screens or on the main info screens, like where the MPG or trip time are. In addition, I believe there are adjustments that can be made in the computer to tell it what size tires I am now running, possibly to also update the pressure alert chimes and maybe other stuff.

I have a Vag-Com genuine interface from my VW days, and I have already used that to check and clear the codes from when I ran the ORM briefly.

So what do I need in software to get into the more advanced functions of the BCM or ECU? The Vag-Com software gave me that ability on the VW, is there an equivalent for Jeep?

Fairly certain, geordi, that o\h module reflects only the data programmed into the ECM and the BCM and several optional modules - 'nuther words, you saw tire pressure info at power-on because the donor KJ had tire pressure
monitor - if you have the premium option, drive around the block at greater than 20mph, and the EVIC will update

Oh boy. I just went to a wrecker and bought an EVIC part #56042271AB which we pried off an '00 Grand Cherokee Limited.

Now I have a CRD which has been known to give all sorts of problems with normal ODBII scanners.

Tomorrow I will find out if this stuff will work. Going to take it for a 20-30 minute drive to see if this little pup will keep working.

I've taken it on an 80+ mile drive since then, still no update. But I *know* I have the TPMS, I have an 05 CRD (Should have been mandatory in those IIRC) and I've physically seen the sensors and gotten the part number off them. Also, I have the dashboard idiot light. So there must be a way of getting into it to reprogram the ECU. On a VW, it was called "recoding" and just involved finding a certain number for the "module coding" and changing a digit or two.

That would then flip options like:
Seatbelt detector
manual or automatic transmission dashboard indicators
lots of other stuff that I can't remember now.

Does anybody know the actual model number of the Bosch ECU for the Jeep CRD?

You have the base version TPM - need the premium option software - prolly requires a reflash.

Ok, see thats what I was wondering: if there was a "base" version for the code. But coders are lazy. They like to program the full "bells and whistles" version first, then just turn off the goodies using a tiny little bit of code. So in the VWs, opening up those goodies meant just a simple number change. I can't believe that Mopar would be that different, as Ford has done the same thing.

Most of these programmers and engineers go to the same cocktail parties and business meetings. They all share the same cost-saving crap. I've just got to find the right computer program. *sigh* Back to google...

Autoenginuity pc-ware scantool with the DCX-enhanced software has all the functionality of the DRBII with ECM-PCM-TCM-ABM-BCM-FCM-WCM-SKREEM-SKIM - you name it, it's in there - it can turn modules on and off for testing - other than that, not much out there for DCX, as it's Mistubishi\Aisin\Mercedes\Bosch stuff

Well, that is at least something. Looks like I might need to sell my Vag-Com unit then, unless I can find a software solution that can use it. Blarg.

LOL - don't call it crap. You live on that stuff, you know where to save a pretty penny because they were lazy. Had they done the full deal you would have to buy a new ECU/BCM/TCM unit.

Um, this is just smart, its code reuse, and because the same code is used in multiple products it gets tested by multiple different test engineering teams, which results in fewer bugs. Its not an issue of laziness, honestly its more lazy to just code something new for each individual application, after all you do not have to go through nearly as much quality control and rather than learn someone else's code you have everything done 'your way'.

Heh, I must somehow be missing out on this aspect of the industry. I don't think I've yet been to a coder and engineering cocktail party. Most of them get together over an Xbox 360 and beer. ;)

Well, I'll just throw this out there. I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for.. but might help you. If you want access to actually download and modify the Bosch ECU's code you would need a BDM (back door method) device. ( such as http://www.evc.de/en/product/ols/bdm/default.asp ). You open the ECU and make direct contact to the board to get access to and modify the code. The company that sells the BDM hardware can even give you a checksum usually that will be your base for your performance modifications. I know with some cars I've tuned before there were many things other than fuel, timing, boost etc.. that could be modified or activated. I never knew what I could turn on or off until I received the base code.

edit.... our ECU is a Bosch EDC15C2.. and may be programmable via OBDII.. I just found it on google.

TPMS not mandatory in 05. 06 was the first year at 100%. My crd doesn't have it, nor do I want it.

Well, my Autoenginuity device and the enhanced adapter arrived today... Could you tell me how exactly to "turn modules on and off" in their program? I'm able to browse the sensors and I can LOOK and log dang near anything, but being able to touch and adjust anything... Not happening. I'm either a moron and can't get their non-user-friendly program to do ANYTHING useful... Or there is some magic menu that I can't find that lets me in to change things.

Under the "live grid" tab (most of those tabs are only for monitoring or logging it seems) I can change the settings of the sensors... But the data doesn't seem to be affected. Only the readings.

Oh, and I think I may have discovered what the tire problem is, but of course, the service manual just says "It will automatically set itself" or the other option is to just throw parts at the problem.

Real helpful. How about re-initializing the location keys? Thats what it looks like I need to do, and figure out why two tires are "tagged as spare" according to the BCM...

So where can I actually change settings?

If you have not, go to their site and get the readme file on all the specific to DCJ Enhanced points accessible - it's about 30 single-spaced pages with no header or footer - I won't have access to my AE for a nuther month, as #2son is doing his EMT clinicals and school and work

To do anything with the TPMS, you'll need to go into the wireless control module and then "TPM System Localization Status" and "Tire Pressure Sensor Autolocate Enable".

Also, go into the EVIC and explore the "TPM Autolearn Status". in the evic there should also be an option for tire pressure training.

Good luck!

That sounds great and all... But are you perhaps referring to the screens in a DRB? I can see all sorts of sensor information (and anything I can look at is in that list, like part numbers and error counters) on the AE enhanced device, but the "actuation" window is ALWAYS empty.

I'm starting to wonder if I got a crap device, it also throws an error at me telling me I need a firmware update (and to contact AE for an RMA) to enter the enhanced powertrain... And it won't enter that module. The enhanced powertrain is SUPPOSED to be one of the primary uses for this complete enhanced gizmo... Thus far, I'm less than impressed.

As far as I remember the only way to program anything OEM(PCM,TCM,and BCM) is from the use of the DRBIII and a internet connection to Chrysler's programing web site(which only athorized dealers have access to). Some vehicles you just can't "program" all the bells and whistles, you need the proper hardware,if you don't have the premuin BCM some of the functions you want are not available due to hardware/software missing.

When I worked at a dealer I used a $5000 MAC scanner, could do everything the GM's TechII,Ford STARII,and the DRBIII but program stuff, had to use the respective scanner and the internet to do those types of things, heck you needed tthe respective scanners to program most higher end models key fobs.Your just not going to be able to access the correct programs off the net unless you buy a dealership. But I could be wrong, things could have changed in the last 4 years but I doubt it.

DRBIII is pre-02-04 OBD2, without CAN, as is AE - Stars-can is post-04 OBD2 and CAN, as is AE Enhanced - if your ebay-special is telling you it needs an official firmware upgrade B4 it can help you, wise move would seem to be to get in touch with AE for further assistance - maybe that's how your acquisition wound up on ebay: AE couldn't fix that one - may have been owner-damaged, resulting in the erronious error - too many unknowns for my liking

No, see that is where the confusion comes from:

The generic device was purchased on Ebay, yes. BUT it was purchased NEW (and shipped from) AutoEnginuity. I've been on the phone with them a couple times already before I purchased anything, so that I could get both the generic OBD II device and the Enhanced Inteface, and they knew what vehicle I was buying it for.

What they failed to mention was that since I was buying the enhanced interface, which is a hardware device for Chryslers... I don't NEED the generic device. I haven't used it at all, except for a quick check to see if that would show any "actuation" commands.

According to the screenshots on their website, the actuation stuff will just appear as a list of sensors and possible commands to send, and checkboxes to turn the command-send on or off.

Nothing at all appears on my screen, EVER, in any system. I don't know why. According to the firmware updater, I have version 20, which is the current version. But the enhanced powertrain error message was telling me that I need a KWP2000 module. That might be part of the problem, or the vehicle profile data is wrong, and that is why the program won't show me the commands. Its frustrating, because they would not answer their phones at all today for the last 4 hours or so... And they were supposed to be open during that time.

Now the dealer tech monkey was the one telling me that I didn't need a starscan, I needed to use the DRBIII on this thing. But he also wasn't able to do anything useful with his DRBIII when he plugged it in. The only thing he could do was tell me that one of the tire sensors wasn't sending it's serial number. Ok, big deal, that was probably the spare. But the AE is showing me various possible sensors to watch, and the list of sensors doesn't match.

For example, some of the items for TPMS tire 1 are tire blowout counter, checksum counter, low pressure counter, fault counter
While tire 2 might only have checksum, low pressure, and thats it. Tire 3 wasn't listed at all, tires 4 and 5 also had different lists of items to look at... And tires 2 and 4 were showing data of "240" in the fault counter or checksum counter.

Obviously there is a problem in that system somewhere. If I can't get some help from AE on Monday, I think I'm going to be stuck going back to the dealer and having them figure it out, while wasting more of my time and money. :(
