I’ve seen a couple of threads were people are saying that the torque convertor clutch is not engaging in 4th or 5th
resulting in low mileage. I am wondering if there is anyway to tell when the torque converter clutch engages without
having a scan tool hooked up? I can tell when the gearshift points occur.
When you are cruising along, if you accelerate a bit and the tach RPMs increase, you're not locked up. If the RPMs only go up proportionally with the increase in speed (they barely increase as you accelerate), you're locked up. When it's locked up, the tach will behave like it does in a manual transmission car. When it's not locked up, torque conversion (trading RPMs for torque) can occur, what most people consider to be normal automatic transmission behavior.
The posts I've seen about not being locked up were during warm-up when the transmission was still coming up to temperature.
