Post subject:  Delayed transmission engagement

Our Liberty has started to do something which is concerning, when you first star it up in the morning and put the transmission in drive or reverse, it doesn't move. If you rev it up significantly it will then go, or wait 20 or 30 seconds it will go. After that first delay, it works fine for the rest of the day. It seems like the fluid is bleeding out of the torque converter, as with the filter problem in one of the early TSB's. The fluid level is right, and I have serviced the filters and fluid twice, and the problem persists. We took it to the dealer, and their first answer was that the problem was due to the PML pan, when we didn't accept that, they reflashed the control module, with no effect. It has not been F-37'd, and I don't think I want that done. Anyone have similar prblem?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi, Chris. What are the ambient temps like in the mornings where you live? If it just started, I'd check the easy stuff first like, "It's really cold and the tranny has a lockout before the fluid reaches operating temps".. I may be completely off base, but it's easy to check :)

I don't think temp is an issue, I live in Florida with morning temps between 50 and 70 degrees.

Hi Chris,

This is exactly what the F37 fixes. Get the hard parts of the recall done, but be very clear that you want the software updates omitted.

Hey, mine does exactly that every morning. It has all the recall work done, and has done it since. I don’t have any history on it as I bought it right after the ball joints and torque converter (and F37) was done.

Is there a problem that I should know about? Seems like it is just a check valve that is not checking. After it is started, I put it in neutral and wait a few seconds. Then everything works fine.

So is there still a problem with the stealership’s work?

Tim.
As I recall one of the early TSB's for the 05 and early 06 crd's was for a incorrect filter that didn't have a check valve in it. Then to make matters worse the bad filters got back into stock

Post subject:  same for me

I have the same issue, exactly.

It does not always happen, and seems to be more related to how long the car has been sitting unused, more than anything else.

I have the f37 plus all the tranny updates current to September 2007.

My Jetta TDI used to do that all the time, the KJ hasn't done it yet, thankfully. The Jetta was more susceptible to it after sitting for a longer time, short "sleeps" and it was ready to move instantly. It also seemed to do it more in colder weather.

I don't know how similar they are, but thats the info I have.

For anyone wanting the info on their KJ about the service history, go to your local dealer and ask NICELY for the "VIP REPORT" on your vin. You will only need the last 8 digits of the vin number for their computer. You need to ask nicely b/c the sheet is not normally given out to the owner of the car.

Mine does it the colder it gets. I have the F37 and a fresh tranny service. I just let it run for 30 or so and put it in gear and it is fine. Only when I jump in and start it and try to drive off do I get this. On occasions I get the shudder as well, I just kick it into nuetral to avoid it.

I have also experienced this problem with my liberty CRD, it has'nt occured in a few months now.

I saw the problem only a few times (3-4) went away. If my memory serves me well it was damp out.

my '05 CRD does that frequently. not always, but more often when it is cold.

It also didn't do it before the F37, but began to do it after the F37 recall was performed.

For what it is worth, it also will lock up the torque converter very early, like at 5 miles an hour, and refuse to unlock at the first stop, causing a stall if I'm not quick enough to bump the tranny into neutral. This happens only when cold, only once in a given day, and also infrequently (ie, not every day, but once in a blue moon).

These symptoms are also common when automatic transmissions are low on fluid. Read the manual and follow the instructions for checking the transmission fluid as a precaution.

I think Joe Ramos has the winning answer. :)

My '05 CRD didn't have this problem until after they replaced a sticking solenoid valve in my tranny. During that work they installed a new (but incorrect) transmission filter. Turned out the new filter did NOT have the check valve in it and the symptom described above began to occur. I took it back the next day and explained carefully to the technician what was happening,. He checked and happened upon the TSB info that warned about installing the wrong tranny filter and described these symptoms exactly. It turns out that the WRONG tranny filter was specified in the early factory service manuals and unless the technician searches specifically for this TSB they may not find it referenced.

Insist that this behavior is not normal - because it isn't! And let them know that there is indeed a TSB that will remedy it. I don't have the number, but the TSB referenced above rings familiar.

Here's the original TSB number. I got it from the FAQ CRD specific TSB's on page one by old Navy. Some time later it was found the wrong ones being used again.

Ours does this also. Had the TSB for it and it seemed to help for a while. No F37. I'm not too worried. It's just the converter fluid draining back into the pan. I think the check valve is a poor quality item for all D/C products. It's proun to fail in the Cummins trucks also. Most of the aftermarket ventors don't bother with the valve. My DTT'd Cummins does it all the time. You just have to give it a second to wake up.

MIne does the same thing, complained enough about it to get a 100K warranty at no charge.

Post subject:  Tranny shuder anf TC unlocks:

 My transmission does the same thing almost every day. On the 27th of Dec. last I drove from St. Louis to Dayton and after about
200 Miles my tranny started to shudder and the TC unlocked as I was getting back on I70 from a rest area. There was a very loud
klunk and a drop in speed from 60 mph to 40 and more tranny shudder and then the Liberty recovered. It did have shudder every time
I Stopped at the rest area's and got back on the Hwy. This is the 4th time I have had this happen. So much for a crap TC and tranny
pump and filter. They sure screwed up F37 on me. I will be seeing the dealer on Friday and he will get a ear full. Also I will file a report
With the NHTSA on this.

Post subject:  Update on Transmission :

I took my Liberty in to the Dealer an told him everything that happened. Coming back from Dayton I had the same
problem that I had going. The TC unlocked at 70 MPH and sudden loss of speed. The car recovered in around 5 to
10 Sec. The dealer tech. call me last Saturday and said that my TCM is bad. and had to order one. Also my CCV is leaking like a sive and he ordered a new CCV and hose. I will update and let you know how the repair goes.
