Post subject:  Soon-to-be CRD Owner

Hi everyone. I'll soon be owner of a green 2005 CRD. It has 39,000 miles, the Towing Package, and the Off Road package. It's my uncle's car, so I know its been in good hands. It's also the car that I passed my driver's license test after two fails with other cars.

The past few days I've been reading as much as I can on the CRD from this forum. But I still gotta ask the typical noob question, what do I gotta do first? I've read about the elephant hose mod, the ORM mod, the V6 air box mod, the recalls. My uncle gave my mom all the paperwork on the car, and I know he already took it in for the ball joint recall, but I haven't looked through everything yet. I've read a little on this dreaded F37 recall. What is it exactly? And if my CRD had it done, any way to undo it? Is there anything else I should know? TSBs, Recalls I don't know about, Essential Mods?

EHM is cheap to do...what I did 1st. Next get the Amsoil Air Filter...more area to filtrate...if you do the 2002 Air Box later the filter will be the same. The 3rd thing I would work on is the ORM/SEGR to save your EGR, lower your intake temps, keep your oil cleaner and make your KJ CRD more fun to drive.

A good synthetic oil/filter, cleaning the MAP sensor and maybe opening up the exhaust a bit would be on order now. Good Luck and WELCOME!

Then save some $$$ and get the Suncoast TC Upgrade and InMotion Tuning Upgrade.

Thanks!

I forgot my uncle put in a new air filter, I think I'll just run that for a while. I should ask him about fluid changes. I think he did oil recently.

So, as for essentials:

1. EHM
2. ORM
3. MAP cleaning
4. Exhaust.
5. Possibly oil filter??

I'm gonna need another job lol. I already got dreams of other stuff like wheels and tires, a lightbar, fog lights, EVIC, but the mechanical stuff is at the top of the list. No sense in making it look good if it doesn't run right!

Well just make sure you don't duplicate any purchases...meaning buy one lift and then change it later....double spending. Check the For Sale Section a couple times a week for deals on some stuff. Look in members SIGS for ideas.

Opening the exhaust is a cheap mod as well. I changed out my stock muffler for a glass pack for about $25, another $10 for the clamps.

Make sure the previous owner has used the correct oil (0w40 or 5w40 synthetic diesel oil), and find out how recently it has been changed. Also be sure and check the fuel heater plug for signs of melting.

The big mods for me would be airbox (if you live in a wet climate), SEGR, and better tires. Then Provent (instead of the EHM).

Someday I'll tinker with my exhaust. Bigger concerns for me right now are rear brakes (one of my calipers is sticking) and the fuel filter head.

Post subject:  cleanliness is next to.... um... longevity.

I say focus on making basic things run better and you'll have more time to play with go-fast and go-dirty mods later. Get quality filters, fluids, and fuel and change them religiously and you'll go a long way. After that, anything that gets unnecessary crap out of the intake and turbo is good (MAP cleaning, EHM/filter, and exhaust). if you have money and time left, go to town. Since you're in Florida, the tires aren't quite as much of a liability as some of the other things, so as long as they're in good shape, they'll give you pretty good mileage. If you feel like dropping a few hundred bucks, you'l definitely be happier and a little safer driving.

Post subject:  Quick Mods

The EHM and ORM are quick, easy mods. Those were the first things on my list. Cleaning the MAP took a whole 10 minutes as well.

Add yourself to the SEGR buy list so we can get another run of these produced!

Easy way to check for outstanding recalls on your vehicle - go to the Jeep website under the Owners section. You can type in the last 8 digits of your VIN number, and it will (usually) list any outstanding recalls on your vehicle.

Ask your uncle if the dealer ever mentioned anything about F37 or did any type of work on the tranny.

Even if they didn't perform the hardware portion of F37, it may have been reflashed with the software at one time or another. If you know someone with an Eqqus or similar scantool that can read what version software is loaded in the modules, you can tell whether or not this was done.

If the ECM version is "CE" or earlier and the TCM version is "AF", then you still have pre-F37 software. Consider yourself lucky, and don't let the dealer within 100 yards of that OBD port!

If the ECM version reads "CF" or later, and the TCM version reads "AI" or "AJ", then you've been F37'd. Only way known right now to partially undo this is to install an Inmotion tune on the ECM.

If your vehicle isn't listed for the F37 recall, it's never been performed or the modules reflashed, and your tranny is still operating fine, I'd never breathe a word about it if/when you have reason to visit the dealership.

You can also go to your local dealer and have them pull the "VIP" report on your vehicle. It will give you the entire history of the vehicle if it's been serviced by a Jeep dealer.
