Post subject:  Black Engine Cover?

I went to route my block heater cord yesterday and removed the black engine cover that is on top of the engine. Besides keeping in heat, does anyone know if this does any good? I removed it being an old school diesel guy. I'm not real sure why they put it there from the factory? Maybe just for looks?

Thanks

Pete

Tim,

That was my same thinking!!! Can I ask which magnaflow muffler you used? I've got to get this boat anchor factory exhaust brake off of this thing...

I can't hear a difference with it on or off. As far as I'm concerned everyone should just chuck the thing. I want to see my engine, not some dinky plastic cover that tells me I have a CRD.

Hey, didn't you know that we all paid extra for that cover?

My friend in Wyoming would probably call that decorating style "late 20th century greenback".

He tends to get a little peeved at the attitudes of some of the transplanted Denverites that have moved into his area of Wyoming to cash in on the natural gas boom that's going on (Rock Springs).

I can somewhat understand how he feels. I've lost count of the number of times that, here in my area of NC, I've gotten behind a transplant that's still running with expired NY/PA/OH/etc plates because they're too bloody cheap to pay for registering their car in NC and avoid paying state and county property tax on them.

HA, to take the topic further off topic........

Ya there is alot of natural gas exploration going on around here, its wierd even 5 years ago it was just dead like that.

Lots of it along the western slope, woman I know ended up getting a small stake in some mineral rights from her families property, she managed the estate for the family and managed to hold onto the mineral rights herself.

Now she is getting something like a $8,000 check from the natural gas they let out outta the ground there.

My father used to be an oil man back in texas in the '80s, before the bottom fell outta it, geologist by trade moved into the federal government doing environmental cleanup stuff. Been good for him ever since.

For wall art - check out tjkj's - jeep grill and assorted SFA parts laying around in the SFA section.

back to the original question - I remember someone having warranty issues and the dealer maintained that he had to have the cover on there (it was one of the dealers that wasn't real sure what a diesel was). - caused him to drive home and get it - so that he could get his Jeep out and take it to a real mechanic.

It's only real purpose is sound insulation

I like the look of the cover better than the engine itself, with that harness and the cover mount pimples all over the valve cover. Some engines are meant to be shown off, and I don't think the VM unit is.

Not if you nail it to the wall.
