Post subject:  AMSOIL HDD 5W30 engine oil!

Back when we had our Liberty CRD, I was running the Amsoil Series 3000, HDD 5W30 engine oil. We traded the KJ before I got to do an oil analysis. However, for those who might be interested, I have been running the HDD 5W30 in my Dodge Cummins ever since I bought it new in 2006. I have recently installed the Amsoil by-pass filter and I am now taking an oil sample at 4,000 mile intervals. I do run my truck pretty hard and pull an 8,500 lb 30‘.5 foot travel trailer. I recently received my first oil analysis report at 31,614 on the truck and 3,975 miles on the oil sample. The results are excellent, therefore I will be going an additional 4,000 miles before taking the next sample. I am also running a Workhorse Module (pressure box) which is also available for the Liberty CRD. The Workhorse Module adds a very noticeable (impressive) performance increase in horsepower, torque, and mpg. This is one module that I would encourage any of you to buy. Anyway, I am slow to put on miles, so I will post my oil analysis results after running another 4,000 miles.

I like the Series 3000 but I got even better UOAs with the AME 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine...better wear numbers for the CRD at least

Post subject:  Engine Oil

I thought the "European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil AFL" was the closet thing to the Mobil 1 0w-40 recommended in the manual. This is what I was planning for my next change in 1,000 miles. Am I wrong again?

Also, is there an amsoil oil filter made for the crd and if so, what is the part number.

My power stearing bottle needs topping off. The book says to use ATF+4 in it. Will any brand work or should I go to the dealer for a Mopar bottle? Does Amsoil make an ATF+4 type oil since it is called for in the tranny and transfer case as well? Would I have to drain the power streering fluid to replace it with an amsoil product? The book calls for the differential fluid change every 15,000. Would that be necessary with a better oil product? My 05 calls for an additive to the rear for the differential lock. Does amsoil have that additive?

How about you amsoil experts posting a list of the amsoil products available and part # if applicable for all the fluids and filters available for the crd and the recommended change intervals for each.

My dealership changed the engine oil and differentials about 5,000 miles ago. They had me purchase the Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 oil filter and they used it. They supplied the differential oil. My oil is ink black right now although the SEGR was only operational for about 1,000 miles ago. I hope that cleans up a bit now.

Post subject:  Amsoil DEO 5W-40

My first post - really enjoy this forum, which is made even more interesting by all the different personalities. It doesn't get any better than this.

Question: What about Amsoil DEO 5W-40?

Welcome to the forum Jim! LOST is a great forum and there are a lot of good men/ladies who are on here. To answer your question, any Amsoil product is going to be excellent. And to be honest, no engine is alike. JJ, who posted above, is a great guy and will assist you in any way possible to further your understanding of Amsoil products. I run the 5W30 because it has been shown in the lab and out in the field to have the most superior film strength over any diesel oil on the market while providing fuel efficient results. The testimonies alone are amazing. There are trucks running over 30,000 miles on one interval using the Series 3000 HDD 5W30 and still showing no break down in the oil. Amsoil, based upon the Liberty CRD manufacturers specifications, recommends three oils for the CRD. Here is a link to each one and you can decide for yourself.

Synthetic 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil

SAE 10W-40 Synthetic High Performance Motor Oil

Most of your questions have already been answered in the above post. Here are a few more answers. The AMSOIL ATF transmission fluid can be used in your power steering. The EA034 is the Amsoil oil filter for the CRD. Here is the link: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/detail.aspx?ID=3484
PM JJ if you would like to know more information or purchase the products. He can have them delivered straight to your front door (UPS).

Jim, Welcome! The DEO is used by some CRD owners and it is good stuff. There are several posts in here about people using various different Amsoil syns in their CRD's. Good luck w/ all the reading you have to catch up on.

BTW, How is Sierra Vista doing? I came Real close to transfering out there w/ Northrop Grumman where my "day job" is. I still may pursue it in the future once my kids are out of school.

Later, JJ

Post subject:  Thanks

Dieselenthusiast - Thanks for the info. Actually, I have been to the Amsoil site many times and can't seem to figure what which of the diesel oils would suit the little tractor the best - just looking for recommendations. I've been of the Rotella T Syn club for quite some time and think I can do better. As far as Amsoil is concerned, about 20 years ago a friend of mine who was hooked on Amsoil gave me a little hands on demo about the oil. We took the largest screwdriver we could find and did the dip - a quart of dino, Mobil 1 and Amsoil. The point of the demo was to see if one could hang onto the screwdriver handle after it was dunked each of the lubricants. We dunked the screwdriver handle, which was very clean before the first dunk, in each of the oils and meticulously cleaned it after each trial. The first dip was dino. No problem gripping the handle. The second dip was Mobil 1. Very difficult holding onto the handle without it slipping out of your hand, but it could be done. The third dip was Amsoil - don't know what type, just that he was using it in his '67 Mustang (stock 289 2bbl) - I tried and tried and tried, but couldn't get enough grip on that screwdriver to hold on before it fell out of my hand after several tries. What does that prove? Maybe nothing, but I like to think it has a little to do with that little thing you mentioned called film strength.

JJ - I'll get with you soon. As far as Sierra Vista is concerned, its still here and not a bad place to live. I was stationed at Fort Irwin not too long ago and made several trips to the Lancaster, Palmdale and Bakersfield areas. I'll take Sierra Vista over that any day.

Jim

I’ve been running Amsoil since the mid 90’s. My claim to fame was running the Amsoil 0W30 in my 1995 Tahoe (350 throttle body) and logged 247,000 miles on her before I sold it. I sometimes didn’t change my oil but once a year as recommended. I also ran the Amsoil ATF and never had to replace my factory transmission. 247,000 miles isn’t anything amazing, but it does show that Amsoil is far from snake oil! I use their products in everything I own including tractors, lawnmowers, chainsaws, vehicles, garden tiller, generator, and I even use their food-grade grease for my honey extractor. I guess you can say that I am hooked! This is my first time to do an oil analysis. I’m hoping that I can take my Cummins to 700,000 miles without an overhaul. Ideally, my goal is 1 million miles. But, we’ll see!
