If you core the catalytic converter will it throw a code?

Nope. And your biodiesel will smell like it should.

Rebar was my tool of choice but took a long time. Next time I will buy a drill bit extension so I can get a spade bit in there.

Leaving mine as is for present - NC is starting to make noises about requiring emissions testing for diesels, and the next county to the south (Mecklenburg/Charlotte, NC) is a EPA non-attainment zone - Ranger1 said it took them 45 minutes minimum to inspect his gasser Honda, and they made a point of checking the cat to make sure it wasn't hollowed out.

Catalytic converters keep the air clean. And I've got more than enough torque.

Isn't the Cat on the CRD a soot digester that just breaks down the particulates? Run a line to a gauge and get the reading before you gut it, gutting may be a waste of time and money. Plugged Cats on Diesels is like dead birds around wind turbines, very rare.

Feel the same way. 27,000 on the CRD plus 8,000
behind the motorhome on tow bars. Sometimes out west
would like to have remote start and push to help me
over the mountains, LOL.

The cat in our CRD uses a diesel oxidation catalyst. This does nothing for NOx which is the main emission of concern for the EPA, but does change CO into CO2 neither of which contribute to smog. the other thing that they do is reduce visible HC particulate size, not necessarily reducing the amount of unburnt Hydrocarbons just the size of soot particles. This kind of Cat does nothing for our engine when it is in proper running order, they mainly make old worn out ones seem to be cleaner. My county is also in an EPA non-attainment zone and when I went for my last inspection after the cat was "fixed" the process which normally takes 1 minuet took about 30 minuets because the genius tech could not get a reading from his machine and called his supervisor over then the two of them tried recalibrating it. When that did not work they went over the whole exhaust system looking for some kind of modification which would eliminate particulates. Of course they found none. At last I had to tell them "look if you don't see any smoke then it's clean, just pass it through so that I can be on my way" They manually added a 0.001 PPM particulate reading because their system will not let a vehicle pass with a zero. I was of course running Biodiesel. The point of all this rambling is that the cat in our jeeps are not needed and there was a definite improvement in turbo spool up and performance as well as exhaust note.

The emission inspection in Chattanooga only checks Particulates. What kinds of inspections are happening in other parts of the country?

Post subject:  Chicago area for diesels

We have no planned or regular emissions inspections for light duty automotive diesel engines. With the poor fiscal management of the current administration, they figured the ECM controlled emissions systems are good enough. Plus the salt eats up all the older cars and they either get restored so no one drives them on a regular basis or they are scrapped.

But they reserve the right to do all kinds of stuff in the court room if you mess around and pollute the air.

But old MACK trucks owned by contractors or land fill companies, CTA buses, and PACE buses can smoke all they care with out a problem, just don't be driving a Peterbuilt or Kenworth and blow any smoke.

In reality, don't tick off any cops, weigh masters, elected officials, unfriendly neighbors, or do-gooders.

Typical Chicago Metro Politics :P

There is a downloader for the Cummins that has a half power mode. Among other things, it can be used to past emmisions that won't otherwise be past. Download 1/2 power, pass emissions, down load XXXpower program and leave the inspection station in a cloud of black smoke    Just kidding.

In Missouri only St. Louis and surrounding area along with Kansas City and surrounding area have emissions. And far as know all they do is check the computer for codes. They used to use the sniffers but abandoned that. The changes are new and I haven't had to have mine inspected yet.

The first time that I got an inspection all they did was check codes. but last time they sniffed it as well.

With B20 and no cat you will pass ANY states em with flying colors....Everytime I take my PSD in for em the techs think the test machines is broken and recalibrate it....This year the finally remembered me and asked if I ran bio :D No cat on it from 2 days after I bought it.
So far we don't have to em the Libby. Only every other year on new vehicles.
