Post subject:  Timing Belt

Anyone had the timing belt changed? I'm curious about cost and how much time it took.

Well it was changed on mine at 100,000kms but I didn't own the car back then :D

It is a 100,000kms (60,000miles) service job. Dealer performing the 100,000km service replaces the timing belt.

Got mine done a couple weeks ago, alas in RSA figures: ~R4350.00 ~$2.00 only joking, around $621.00. DC claimed it would take 2 days (they're just lazy) Should be doable in 5hrs if they make no mistakes. But it is a labour intensive exercise, they need to remove the radiator, the fan belt, a few other goodies and then only do the get down to the timing belt cover. The belt in RSA was around R1000.00. Normally it is recommended to replace the idler pulleys as well as the belt, this is very expensive. Plus if you take the fan belt off (which you have to), it is also advisable to replace it.

Thanks. I'm at 40,000 now so I have some time left to save the $$.

I thought it was a 100k MILE service not KILOMETERS?

I just looked in my owners' manual, and it says 100,000 MILES not kilometers in my manual, too. I wonder . . . is this perhaps a repeat of the famous NASA loss-of-Mars-mission error? You know, when the left hand gets you there in km and the right hand tries to land you in miles?

All that said, it definitely says 100,000 miles in my owners' manual. Still. I looked. And since VW went to 100,000 mile timing belts on their 2002.5 TDI's it makes perfect sense to me for that to be the distance. But I believe I will inquire of my mechanic, just to make sure, as I just did the 50,000 mile service.

Yup, I think in my owners manual it says it is to be changed around 150000kms, that is just short of 100000 miles (they seem to like nice round figures).

I live close to plenty mining (Platinum/Chrome), apparently the dust generated seems to kill the timing belts prematurely. Have a friend who has had is engine repaired 3 times due to a 3 snapped timing belt (Audi 2.0 FSI still under 100000kms). When I had my Jeeps belt replaced the mechanic recommended changing it again in 60000kms because of the dust factor. All be it the belt does seem to be well sealed with that dust cover.

That makes perfect sense. I'm sure the original recommendation (whatever it is/was) was made assuming "normal" driving conditions, and should be shortened for especially severe service, like excessively abrasive dust exposure.

I checked my manual and funny enough the manual says 100000kms for first change, the 200000kms for second, must be you have better conditions out in the States thus your belts last longer :)

Really odd. Well, most vehicles here are done between 90000kms and 120000kms.

Dealers are lying cheating ba**erds. No way do you have to take out the radiators. I did mine myself after they gave me a quote of 1275€ for the 100k tune up. ( that's US $ 1866,34  ).

I got the parts from my MOPAR store for around 500€ / ($ 731) including all filters / idlers / tensioner etc. Anyway, if you take of the cooling fan an it's shroud you've got lot's of workspace. (might be different for '04-'07 models)

You can even reach the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts from above, no need crawling under the car.

And in my Spanish manual it also says 100.000km for changing the belt. Might be a 2.5 thing? Here's what the official manual says:

that is really odd. I don't doubt that's what your owner manual says. But I'm clueless about why the manuals would simply switch units like that. What scares me now is the notion that they hired a moron to change the manuals for the US market, and simply did a find/change in their word processing program, substituting miles for kilometers. 90000 kms to 120000 kms is 56000 miles to 75000 miles, which is the same range (roughly) for most VWs here as well. Since we don't get any other diesel cars, only trucks here, it is all I have to go by.

All the engines use the same configuration and I believe the same belt/pulleys/tensioner/procedure/etc (has been on every one I've taken apart). The 2.5 engine in the same application as the 2.8 worked considerably harder thus why they might have shortened the interval some. Also they might have improved material over the years as I know the later 2.8 even for export were 150000km.
