I have 85k on my CRD as of now. I wonder how long this jeep will be reliable. I love it as long as I do not start
having problems, I plan on keeping it until 150k or so. What to you all think.

I have 60k on mine essentially without problems. To think that the CRD will go hundreds of thousands of miles is a pipe dream. Other than the diesel, its just a Liberty. It is subject to all the same problems and part degredation as other Libertys and will not last into the next century. The diesel might outlast the car itself, but who knows. The only predictor of future behavior is past behavior. The long term longevity of the Liberty is unknown as it has only been around a short time (since '92?). How many of the gas versions went hundreds of thousands of miles? I don't know myself, but strongly suspect that it there were a reputation for the car lasting hundreds of thousands of miles we would have heard of it.

In short then, if you get 150k, be happy and sell it to some poor slob who doesn't know better.

Au contraire, bad-vibes breath - reason cars don't last 150kmi is because they are gassers (patooie!) - gasoline washes the lube off the cylinder walls so the rings begin to work their way out sideways first time the engine is cranked over - Diesels, on the other hand, inject a light oil into the combustion chambers, with little effect on cylinder lubrication.

The 2.8L CRD engine is sleeved, just like the big boys - lose a cylinder or piston, pop the head, replace the bad cylinder, and yer good to go

Other than that, keep it clean and lubed, rebuild the transmission every so often, new battery, waterpump, brakes\rotors a.r., tires a.r., wheel bearings, suspension components every hundred k - no reason why it shouldn't outlast the driver, just like the old WWII Jeeps, still flat-fendering along somewhere

I agree with gmctd. Do regular maintinence and there is little reason it would fail. Its possible you could have transmission, electrical and other problems, but that would be no different than other cars, and the engine itself should be solid. If your driving pattern is 'typical', you do your maintinence proactively, and you don't live somewhere that will rot the vehicle(ie: somewhere with bad roads and lots of salt), I see no reason it shouldn't go hundreds of thousands of miles.

BTW, the Liberty has only been on the market since the 01/02 model year I believe, so we don't have any real long term data yet.

Most of the mod's I've made to my Jeep have been aimed at increasing longevity and fuel economy while decreasing repair needs.

When my stock torque converter eventually goes, I intend to Suncoast it and install a nice tranny cooler with fan. I'm hoping that stretches the rebuild interval out beyond 100k.

That plus 2 micron fuel filtering should keep the drivetrain going. I'm hoping the body/frame proves to be at least as durable as the old XJ model line.

I have to say though, I'm eying the introduction of 1/2 ton diesels with some anticipation. A 1/2 ton (or Dakota-sized) pickup hitting 30 mpg highway would be hard to pass up.

The liberty replaced the Cherokee XJ which was known to exeed 200,000 miles if maintained well. I think the Liberty is tighter and tougher and was a real upgrade from the XJ even with the IFS. A lot of guys might complain that it's harder to lift the Liberty. I've owned XJ's lifted with budgit lift kits and they were no fun to drive.
I say 250,000 miles if we can do something about the EGR

The alloy cylinder head is the major downfall for the CRD lasting a long time,150,000-200,000 miles might be the max before a major rebuild is needed.

I think it will last a very long time. I was just trying to find an article I read about this very motor in a taxi in europe. The vehicle was approaching 1 million miles on the original un-overhauled motor. Gas engines easily last to 150 k these days, I am betting with normal maintenance you could not wear this motor out in your lifetime.

Huh? Wasn't aluminum heads supposed to stay good for more miles than cast-iron ones?

I know of plenty of cracked heads on aluminum, but these were caused by poor cooling or rapeage in terms of not monitoring engine temps properly.

Haven't heard of heads dying by wear, more by cracking caused by excessive temperature and the difference in expansion coefficient between iron and aluminum.

Hey, I hope the libby will last me at least 190,000miles. I will look after it properly and keep the service on the drivetrain. If it does go as far as I hope I will be thinking about getting a new SUV. At my current rate it will take me 6 years to reach 190,000 miles.

I had an 85 Volvo 745TD it had a 2.8L straight 6 and it was still going when I sold it with 312K mi on it and the original turbo was still spinning up. My 6.2L NA Suburban went 220K mi and I only dumped the crankcase oil every 100K mi. Point is like gmctd said with good maintenance these CRD's should last a while. I figure the bottom end should be good for at least 400K mi if they are treated well. Of course you may subcribe to the German Manufacturers theory that life of the vehicle ends with the expiration of the warranty. That is pure balony. Back in the 50's a cars life was expected to be 100k MI. today cars are built with much better tolerances and with decent preventative maintenance they live a lot longer. My auto insurance guy has an Avalon and has 360K mi on it and the engine has had one valve job. He services it more often than the dealer recommends. I don't think that the dealer/manufacturer has the customers best interest at heart but wants to make lots of money off of them. I guess that is why we call them stealers.

I finally get to pronounce gmctd WRONG.
I have a 02 jeep liberty gasser that I handed down to my lovely daughter that has 215,000 miles on it. It uses about 1 qt of oil per 1500 miles. I had the transmission rebuilt at 175,000 miles and the engine oil sensor replace a few months ago. Other than that, nada. I used regular dinosaur oil and changed it every 7000 miles, whether it needed it or not.

I have 79,000 on my CRD and am expecting 300,000 miles on her. I only do regular maintenance on it when Gmctd makes me feel guilty.

I don't think you make gmctd wrong, I think you just validated what he said and your has lasted even longer than his very conservative guesstimate.

When I was a young man, long ago and far away, in another time and another century, a vehicle with 60kmi was considered worn out and a bad risk, and rightly so, at ~10yrs old - today, a vehicle of the right price and shape may be seen to have 150kmi at around 2yrs of age, with only small consideration given to the actual mileage - looks new, smells new, drives new, smokeless, tight, good economy - a joy to acquire and drive.

'Course, it is only 2yrs old at 150kmi, an almost unheard-of combination in that earlier time - the 60kmi suspect of that time would be ~10yrs old at that juncture of mileage and age - just as with me, time and weather has as much effect on overall deterioration and mechanical wear as actual usage - and vehicles are no longer of early-century design, just freshened up in almost-new shapes and colors - today's vehicles are state of the art, of swiss watch precision in all areas, mechanical and fit and finish.

Never-the-less, they are gassers (patooie!) - and, as we all know, gasoline is a bad waste of good Diesel fuel, eh............

The 4 cylinder VM diesel is used in quite a few vehicles including the black cabs you see around the UK and especially in London. With the correct service schedule they can do many 100k miles and that's mainly hard city mileage with some running nearly 24/7.

I think the engine will outlast many other components like the torque converter and autobox.

Cheers

1 quart in 1500 miles SUCKS. Any engine that burns that much oil needs an overhaul.

Use to be, not to long a go, that 1 qt oil consumption in 1K mi was acceptable by most manufacturers. It was kind of the yard stick when a customer came in and complained about excessive oil consumption. You won't see any smoking out the back at 1 qt/1500 mi unless you look really close on backing down or real hard acceleration. It could be valve quide seals. At that rate I would just drive it and keep an eye on it. If it is dripping on the driveway it could be the rear crankshaft seal or a variety of other covers that are leaking/weeping. And it might be just a leaking gasket/seal that could be easily fixed not necessarily needing an engine overhaul. :)
