I have done it. I traded the Liberty in on Tues. I could not handle the diesel prices anymore. Nothing against the Liberty but at $4 a gal vs. 3.09 a gal for gas. It was a no brainer when I drive about 35-40k miles a year.

On a side note I still have a turbo, set of tail lights with a crack in the pass side. And I have a kit ORM kit ordered and paid for that I am going to sell.

Stupid gas prices :x

Sorry you had to sell your KJ.
At least you still have that CJ, so you are still LOST!

Heck, you don't even need a Jeep to be LOST :D

Here, I am at least breaking even with RUGvs Diesel and MPG. I solved my problem with a 50cc scooter that is now giving 124.2 mpg

I wish I could get away with that Walt. I drive 60 miles one way to work and sometimes I have to be here in a hurry.

Ironically diesel prices should start declining very soon. The bubble is subsiding now on oil markets and should continue to do so as speculators move thier cash elsewhere. Plus a ton of refining capacity for diesel is coming online in the next couple years. Won't probably help in the very short term however.

Honestly...if you are driving 40k a year...why would you not benefit from a CRD unless you go green? I am getting 30mpg HWY which is 10mpg more than most SUV's so unless you go with a hybrid, etc...how did you benefit? My wife works 95miles R/T to work and the Jeep would still be a feasible option but since we love the truck so much it made sense to buy a 2003 CIVIC hybrid with 12k miles for $12,900 to run to work. This way she gets 50mpg but we still have the CRD to do what we want with non comuting miles and hopefully get 300k miles from the drivetrain. Yeah sure diesel is up there right now...but what about in 6 months or 2 years when it is cheaper than gas??? Do you regret it now that oil has dropped $10 a barrel in 2 days? Diesel prices at a premium are only temporary.

I'd get the VW jetta with the 2.0 diesel if I were looking for mileage. I've been looking at Liberty CRD's, so far I've had pretty good luck finding them. I'm kinda lookin' for one with high mileage and a reduced price.

I sold my Jetta to get the CRD, b/c I wanted something that could get close to the same mileage (I was only getting about 30-35) but could pull small buildings in a single bound. :D The Jetta was a great car, and the guy that bought it was instantly jealous of my car (that was his then) compared to his other Jetta - Mine was WAY faster, with more miles and fewer mods!

But the VW couldn't pull more than 2500 lbs reliably, even though I asked (and got) mine to not only tow my OTHER Jeep (a 97 Grand Cherokee with a tow bar) but also my 6x12 box with 3400 lbs of crap in it. (scaled to know for sure)

You have to get what works for you. My CRD works for me, until I find a 5-cyl VW Touareg with all the options. Sadly, I know where they all are: Europe. I'd love a V10 for the crotch enhancement... But not for the mileage. So I got the CRD.

The Jetta Sportwagon TDI will be a tempting vehicle when it comes out. I still need to tow and have high clearance though :(

Prices rose $0.04 a gal here yesterday. Gas is holding still. There has not been a refinery go online in the last 25+ years so why now?

I wish someone made a 1 1/2" lift kit for my Wife's '99 New Beetle, it needs it more than my CRD

The Jetta Sportwagon looks like it needs one too, my Wife said it looks too low.

Diesel just went up another $.10 here in the last 2 days, don't see it dropping anytime soon, gas actually went down $.05 in the same time.

seen these 1" and 2" lifts? http://www.metalnerd.com/cat09.htm

I bet you'd get 1.5" if you combined the 1" with some Bilstein HDs

Refineries are only running at 85% capacity, we are not constrained by them. The refining capacity is coming from expansion at existing refineries, and will be diesel focused rather than gas.

And the immediate price of gas never reflects the per barrel price since there is a process it goes through first. But the current run up is due to speculators and the falling dollar, both of which have reversed course(you see the 10% hit gold took this week? Ouch). Whether or not diesel gets reasonable again in the next six months I couldn't say, but long term the prospects are very good.

Liberty to HHR for a couple mpg?? OK. Bet it sucks to trade in a diesel right now with it over $4 a gallon. Must have walked in that place backwards! Hope it treats you well.

This is when making Bio home brew might be worth it! I’m seriously hoping that there is a way to make algae diesel at home, this sounds promising……………..
