So today I went to some trouble and played around with the spare AC unit I have here.

Well I played around and figured out what it takes. By insulating one of the tongs on the mode selector you can prevent the AC from coming on when its on the floor, floor and defrost, and defrost.

Some of you may think thats a bad idea, but I like to drive with the heater on floor mode, keeps me warm without burning my face or making my upper body sweat.

It's downright stupid to run the AC when its 0F outside and my feet are cold. It's also downright stupid to run the AC when all I need is HEAT to melt the ice on my windshield, sure if theres mosture on the inside I want the AC on, but in colorado thats usually not a problem.

Anyways, I have bench tested the modification(via multimeter), but I still need a KJ to test this out in, CATCRD you up for the challenge?

There are other ways to accomplish what I did(bending the tab up didn't work), and I'm not sure how long term the tape is, a better more permanent insulator would certainly be better. Maybe one of those plasti-dip coatings like you use on plier handles.

lol, thats actually exactly what I was thinking for a more permanent solution, cut and solder a wire.

I dont know if you tried to bent the tab so it did not make contact, but when I did that I found that the selector wouldn't work correctly.

much better this way! this is the way the AC controls should be setup!

Uffe you have a different AC control panel.

You could get this newer style 05+ and do this same mod, and it would vastly improve you AC system....imo

Mr ed from down under has been badgering me for this ac unit......he might get his wish now.

From work I can't see the pics on forums if they are linked to imageshack.us (for some reason, probably productivity at work I gather).

I will take a look this afternoon when I get back home to see what you mean :)

there was a link to a thread to another thread about this a few weeks ago..
the guy modified his by putting packaging tape over the part of the connection
that engaged the AC...

kinda like what you did Sir Sam but instead of insulating the whole thing he didn't
apply the tape on the defrost contact so when he went to straight defrost he still
had the moisture reducing part.

Yes you could do that as well. Though I still would not want it to run automatically on that mode.

I consulted my manual, and it would appear the AC is not running when the floor mode is selected. Yeepee!

However the AC is running when I select mix or defrost when the outside temp is below -1C (~30F I think)

I've enjoyed watching the evolution of this mod...course I would never use it since I'm in ATL, which is a giant hot sponge in the summer and only moderately less humid in the winter. I nearly ALWAYS have the AC on around here or the windows will fog. It's like a hot version of the Pacific NorthWest, just without all the mountains, ocean, rivers, and people that use bikes for sensible purposes.

Yup, in your case it doesn't matter. But when my humidity is around 6% and the temp is around 6F the AC is just a stupid waste of gas.
