| Post subject: | Question: Oil change without Fumoto drain valve ? |
I just purchased an 06 CRD that really needs an oil change.....like now ! I'm going to buy the Fumoto drain valve, but I live in Canada and it's going to take quite some time to have this Fumoto arrive north of the border. I don't wont to wait several weeks, I want to do the oil change asap! So my question is: What is the best way to tackle this drain plug without having a disaster on my hands? The drain plug looks like new / not stripped or beat up, what do you guys recommend? One other question: I was thinking of buying the Cat fuel filter adapter at the same time as the Fumoto. The Chrysler/Jeep fuel filters up here retail for $60, my cost $50. I can get Cat filters much cheaper than that, so I was thinking of going with the Cat. What do you guys think of going with the Cat fuel filters? My warranty is void, as I bought this KJ from the USA, so I don't have to worry about that......it's already sliced and diced! Thanks ! On the oil drain plug. Be carefull and make sure there's a copper washer on the drain plug when you put it back in. The problem is when the copper ring is left off the shoulder of the drain plug messes up the first couple of threads and next time your in for it. Make sure your allen wrench fits properly and is completely inserted. Steel drain plugs and aluminum oil pans like to become one This is my take on the CAT filter |

Don't worry about it. Our CRD has 37,000 miles on it, and I've never had one problem with the drain plug after 6 oil changes. It's good advice to make sure the washer is on there, but other than that it's like any other oil drain plug. Use an 8mm allen wrench socket available pretty much at any hardware store. I got mine at Sears, because I stick to Craftsman. |

| Post subject: | Refer to CRD tech section |
I measured the drain plug and posted: Drain plug size, engine oil in the CRD Tech section. I cover a way to repair the engine oil drain plug hole if it strips out, just thread it to Fumoto thread specs if you use the valve. Some dispute my size findings, but I will come up with more testing and documentation to back it up on my next oil change. Rolled threads and die cut threads don't always go together with ease. Give your Allen driver a few taps with a hammer to make sure it is in all the way, most Allens strips from not having the drive fully inserted. Another trick I have used to get out Allen plugs or socket head cap screws is to fully insert the driver and use a $& punch to reform the part that is rounded out back against the driver. Getting over the Border is a pain, I have to have a copy of the PO, sales documents, and tax forms showing that the Canadian Government got every cent of import duties, along with a letter from my boss stating what I am doing. I heard it is easier if you are trying to pick up women in a bar. |

Thanks guys for all the replys! So it's a metal washer by the sounds of it?! If the washer is toast, should I pick one up from Chrysler or should I just find one from a parts store that matches up? It's good to read that it's not a guaranteed disaster performing an oil change without a Fumoto! As far as crossing the border goes, I can handle customs and an booty h**e border agent. It's the protectionism that some auto makers impose on cross border purchases. Like Chrysler and Honda that will not transfer warranty on a vehicle from the United States. My CRD had a 7 year bumper to bumper extended service contract which was flushed down the toilet. I new that ahead of time as it was still worth buying south of the border. |

If you are worried about the oil change, have a dealer do it, then if they strip the pan they get to pay to have it repaced (as my stupid dealer has done twice...should have known they were stupid when they GAVE me FREE oil changes for the first 60K every 5k on a diesel....that I bought below invoice.... |

The parts store things might work, but if they service CRDs, any dealership parts department should stock the washer. It's hugely overpriced but at least you know it's the right one. Buy a few so when your fumoto comes in you don't have to go back Oh, and on the CAT filter... I have one, don't regret doing it, but probably wouldn't again if I know what I do now. If you really don't like head, then get a RACOR or similar. They're much nicer. If you just want a better filter, then I think WIX makes a nice aftermarket one that's cheaper and better than the mopar OEM filter. |

I ordered 2 washers and 1 filter. Part # 4720353 washer-plain $1.60 each 5080374AA filter-vacuum sensor $11.00 each Steve |

So what's the deal on this filter vacuum? Where is this filter located? Does this filter affect the fuel economy if its dirty? I haven't heard of this one! Thanks guys!!! |

do a little searching for your answers. right now there are 3 or 4 threads that are talking about oil filters... i used the M1-301 a few threads down from this one http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=32324 the vacuum filter is just about under the PS res. behind the air box. it is a component in controlling the vanes on the turbo i believe. |

I actually used a T-50 torx to get the drain plug out. Have to invest in a set of allen sockets. |
