 Post subject: Engine Backpressure

I have an 05 Jeep Liberty Deisel and it is building backpressure and blowing the intake hose off the throttle body. The wastegate is not opening but when you unhook it the vaccuum line from it the enigine will run without blowing the hose, but with considerable loss of power.

Anyone who has had the same thing happen to them or knows what i can do to fix it please let me know......Any help will be appreciated!

Welcome to LOST

If you haven't done any mods to the engine - then by design - it blows crankcase fumes into the intake - this coats your hoses to and from the intercooler with oil - they degrade and normally split - although blowing off the connections could also happen. - The fix to this is - new hoses - I think they're about $200 for the pair (mine were under warranty) and then either a EHM (Elephant Hose Mod) or Provent install to prevent future problems -

Sir Sam is also trying to get some Silicon hoses that won't degrade.

I'm confused about the wastegate reference - our Turbo's don't have a wastegate -they have variable vents to control boost.

If the hose is just blowing off but not split/leaking, try giving it a good cleaning on the inside, then doing the Provent of EHM. Might save a few bucks. I have a ccv filter from TDI Wagon Guy over on the Volkswagen TDI forum that works like a Provent, but only costs $50 bucks (but is butt-ugly).

Exhaust pressure, or backpressure would be on the exhaust side, which is what drives the turbine motor which drives the compressor which makes Boost - the oily intake, as described above^, allows the Boost hose(s) to blow off, with reduced power - pulling the vacuum line reduces exhaust pressure in the turbine, preventing compressor operation, so the hoses do not pop off and power is reduced due to lack of Boost pressure

Pull both hoses, clean out the oily mess and reinstall, or replace the oil-deteriorated hoses as mentioned above^

Your vacuum line controls the variable turbo geometry. Pull it and you've got either no or seriously reduced boost pressure.

As others have said the hoses pop off because they're covered in oil from your intake. Make sure you don't overfill that engine with oil, fill it with 6.4 quarts and not a drop more (regardless of the oil dipstick reading).

Don't forget to clean the mating surfaces of the intercooler, turbo, and flow valve assembly (basically all the things the hoses clamp onto) since it might not be a hose failing (yet) but merely a lot of oil and slippery surfaces and clamps that can't hold things in place.

Oh, and simple-green is a pretty good degreaser that's not to harsh. You probably want to soak the hoses in a tub with a barely diluted solution for a few hours to help knock crud out. A decent bottle brush will get the rest out once it's soaked a while.
