Post subject:  Turbo and fuel controller

I took my CRD to the Dealer with a 402 CEL. They checked it out and replaced the fuel control module, $500.00 not in stock they did get one the next day and now they say the turbo is leaking oil, so the need to replace it. They are not sure what took what out, this is all under warranty but they say they have to change the inercooler because itis full of oil and they can not clean it 700$ to replace it, not under warranty. Has any one else had this problem. just a month ago I had to have the injecter pump replaced. I have also had to have EGR valve replace two times. It has 64K miles on it I drive 350 to 400 miles a week. Is it time to toss in the towel. it is like every 10K something takes a sh**. and it not cheap most every thing has been under warranty, but still costly. The Libby is in it's own catagory, when it works; good milage 23 to 24, 4X4, tows OK, easy to park as a daily driver.

Post subject:  Oil in inter-cooler:

:D Bluefish: The oil got into you system because of a poor CCV design. It leakes oil straight into the inter=cooler then to the turbo.
One of the other members awhile back listed a way to clean it all out. try a search on cleaning out the turbo system. Also Chrysler knows
that they are at fault over this and have refused to fix the problem Mabe one of the other members can remember the link here.

good luck Jim

Before retirement I owned VW diesels and drove them for work. I drove at least your mileage every week and if I had to depend on my CRD to preform I would have to bite the bullet and dump it. Yes it's fun to drive, easy to park but it has too many rough edges. The first mile I owned it I had the 55 mph studder. Now at 15k miles my flow control valve stripped it's gears. At first it was noisey but now they have quieted down. The dealer is never able to duplicate so most of my problems.

Dump it

Blue,
My GMC pickup had 14 warranty items in the first 2 years, almost got rid of it. Now around 100k it is quite good.
Tell them the intercooler is cleanable, by the looks of it they like to replace parts.
If you are not into the SEGR and EHM rx's, the root of many evils, you might want to get rid of it.
Have you cleaned the MAP sensor?
Do you have time and inclination? Otherwise I hate unreliable machines and get rid of them.

What is the fuel control module?
Is it the same as the ECM mounted on the inner driverside fender?

Turbo leaking oil? How much oil?
Was smoke coming out of the tail pipe?

Everyone here has seen their turbo hoses coated in oil, but it doesn't mean
the turbo is leaking. We all have some oil in our intercooler as well and it CAN
be cleaned. THEY just dont want to do it.
Most likely cause is the CCV.
If it was really the turbo there would be some bearing damage on the impeller
shaft. Ask if they checked for end-play on the shaft.
Also, if it were leaking, there would be noticable oil loss. Like more than a quart
per month.

EGR problems are just the nature of this beast. The ONLY fix is to disable
the function of the EGR valve.

Also, what were the symptoms that led to replacing the injection pump?
Could have been mis-diagnosed.

While you are at the dealer, since you are at ~65K miles, ask about timing
belt replacement. If you are really unsure about whether or not to keep the
CRD, this will probably help you make your decision. I think the replacement
interval is 90K.

The fuel controll not sure if I am call it the right name, The dealership is relpacing the inter-cooler under warrenty, I won't be able to pick it up until Monday and they are paying for the rental car this time. Do any of you live near Tallahassee FL, if I do keep it I need to get brave and start fixing some of the problems.

The 0402 code is egr or flow control related. There is no such thing as a fuel control module. The shop was most likely refering to the Flow control valve. The flow control valve should NOT cost $500. The intercooler almost certainly does not need to be replaced unless it has split open. If it had enough oil in it to affect it's cooling function, the oil would be sucked into the motor and cause a lot of smoke and a runaway condition. Go to a diferent dealer, Dont dump the jeep. Your two Egr replacements could have been avoided by doing the ORM and were probably unnecesary anyway. Your IP replacement was not faulty equipment, according to your earlier post it was from water in the fuel.

Thanks for all the info, The dealer is paying for most of the repairs and they are covering the rental car too. Sorry it has taken solong to get back but I was working in the yard and cut the cable, had to wait for the repair. I leave this sunday to drive it from tallahassee to buffalo and back. Will see how the trip goes. Just wish I could get it back to drive it for a couple of day before the big trip.

I inquired about cleanh the IC here before and the response I got was 1 gal of diesel sloshed around in it well, clean that put with hot soapy water, rinse till clean and let it dry completely out.

This of course has to be done out of the vehicle. I have not attempted this yet cause you have to drain the rad to do this procedure from what I can tell.

Excuse me, nursecosmo, but while it is true the flow control valve ought not cost $500, it does. Actually, closer to $600. An inexcusable sum, to be sure, but that is indeed what they cost.

Have to agree on teh GMC pickup. I had to have 4 seals fixed in the first two months, other than a water pump at 36K, it has been excellent. I agree with FastRob about GMC experiance. Great truck, and good thing they have a warranty to start ownership experiance.

Well the good news is the FCV doesn't too anything and your Jeep runs just fine without it.
