| Post subject: | Stuttering CRD meets Dealer woes... |
2 months ago I took my '06 Liberty CRD in to the dealer to get an oil change and to swap out the fuel filter. I realize that was my first mistake. Since then it's been stuttering pretty bad at higher speeds when not accelerating, and twice I've driven off down the road and had no power whatsoever (foot to the floor, high-RPMs, could barely break 30mph, etc..). I've had it back to them twice over the last two months to try and address the issue- The first time they had it for 5 days. During those 5 days they replaced the torque converter, replaced the fuel filter twice, checked out the EGR, MAP sensor, and I'm sure other things I haven't been made aware of yet. Apparently they were running into errors when using their data recorder, so they were having issues diagnosing the problem any further so I picked it up and waited for them to contact the higher-ups about where to go next. I just dropped it off again today (possibly my second mistake) as the issue is starting to get worse and I'm losing power more frequently. They also think that they may have worked out the issue with the data recorder, but we'll see how that pans out. From what I can deduce from reading a ton of posts throughout this forum, this sounds like an "air in the fuel system" issue. It all seems to have started when they changed the fuel filter, as I had no problems whatsoever prior to that. I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on what route to take with this, or if anyone has any other thoughts on what it might be. They seem to be trying their best- they've got the regional chrysler tech people involved, and apparently made the right phone calls. The main issue is that we're going on day 7 of them thumping my CRD like a melon and getting absolutely nowhere (aside from me getting a bunch of new parts installed). They're convinced that if they can just get the data recorder working they'll have the answer. I have 10k left on my warranty (26k miles on the vehicle), so I don't mind them throwing s**t against the wall and seeing what sticks, but this is getting just plain retarded. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated... |

I like the fuel lift pump. Gmctd did the work, search up the different lift pumps but make sure if it fails the fuel still flows. My son and I put it under the car in 5 hours and we did not have a clue, just ran the tank low. That way the fuel manager head will not mess with your head. Leave that to the kids. |

Pull the fuel heater plug and see if you have fuel leaking out - have the dealer replace that under warranty (thats probably the only leak they could see -I'm not sure if there gasket seal shows when it's leaking). then put the lift pump in. (Data recorder probably won't help - air doesn't set any codes -best case - they might see a pressure drop on the injector rail) |

(thats probably the only leak they could see -I'm not sure if there gasket seal shows when it's leaking). then put the lift pump in. x2 on the fuel heater. If you can reliably reproduce the problem, see if you can fix it by stopping the vehicle, priming the pump and starting it up again. That will at least tell you if it's the problem. At that point, you can take a dealer tech along for a ride and prove to them that it's air in fuel, after which case they can order you a new fuel head. That'll probably take a week or so, but in the mean-time you know how to do a temporary fix yourself. Dan |

You need to bleed the system with the banjo on the left side and primer pump...get the air out. Then look into a fuel pump down the road. |

Mine showed it's ugly side 1/4 of a mile from the dealer the day I bought it |

Put a lift pump in it, show them that that fixed it, then make em pay for it. |

Dittos on the lift pump. Don't want to sound like a fire and brimstone preacher, just listen to the L.O.S.T. CRD choir for your CRD's salvation. |

I told my stealer that the filter head was leaking and should be replaced. They said I should replace the fuel filter and see if it still leaks. I had to argue about the CCV. I wanted them to replace it or clean it. They tried to tell me it didn't have one. He also said they have never heard of lift pump problems on the liberty. I said, "Duh, it doesn't have one. It should." Of course they did nothing except the oil change. I bet they didn't even use Mobile 1. I think I better find another dealer for my warranty work. |

Try to find one that services Cummins or Sprinter vans - they at least know what a diesel is. |

....but as Dr Phil says, "You can't fix what you don't acknowledge" - s*** I can't believe I just wrote that. Anyway, they ain't gonna pay to fix a problem that they "can't reproduce". |

Yeah, having the dealer do simple maintainence work was more a matter of time and convenience than anything- it was already there for other warranty work, so I figured why not. The second the warranty expires I'm planning on doing the lift pump mod, as well as the air box mod. Anyone know of a good mechanic around west chester, PA that could handle the Suncoast install? I just got a call from the dealer and they think it's the fuel pressure solenoid that has gone bad. We'll have to wait until thursday when they get the part installed to see if that fixes the issue. If not, I'll do the steps that everyone has recommended and see if I can't get them to look at the fuel head. Thanks for the advice. |

Then look into a fuel pump down the road. that might be the problem itself is that they over tightened the banjo bolt and cracked the housing. I did that and barely tightened the thing. No leaks, but she didn't run for poo.

I live in the Coatesville/Parkesburg Area just west of West Chester. Change your fuel filter with an after market WIX filter. All my shuttering and air in fuel problems went away. Plus change the filter yourself it's easy. I now have 76K on mine with no mods. I also cleaned out the intake at 50K. Just remove the intake plenum and put a bunch of rags to catch the run off when you spray brake cleaner through a long thin tube at the hole for the Boost sensor. There is also a plug on the other side of the intake manifold. You can remove that to spray the other side. After you put it back togther just run it hard down the 30 bypass for a few miles. It will smoke a bit then clear up. If you don't want to remove the plenum just spray the brake cleaner in and run it hard. I will be doing this just before changing my oil as normal maintenance. Good luck. Stay away from the D'ambrosa Stealerships. They are real butchers. |

Huh? Can you please explain more about what part of the intake manifold you removed? Did you remove the whole thing that includes the valve cover? Can you post pics of this plug you refer to? |

It's a bit farther up RT 113 but we use Bergey's in Franconia PA for stealership warranty service. They have a large diesel service department on site and seem to understand the little tractor. Only thing denied so far was the CAC clean out when they replaced the CAC hoses. BTW we had a fuel solenoid fail around the 12K mark that caused the engine to stall. |
