I think a diesel engine is much better suited for the future and moving towards energy independence.... |

I am also excited to tap into this "home grown" energy source. It is strange to live in the capital of Indiana and currently have no stations selling biodiesel here in this county. I have to drive 20 miles to get B2, or 60 miles to get B20. The ramifications of this are a waste of fuel that I can not justify as it adds to the problem of excess consumption. If and when I do drive by these areas, I will top off my tank but this has not happened yet. I just turned 2000 miles on my '05 CRD and I'm hoping that I can use biodiesel after running only straight #2 so far. What would be really nice is if the suggested $10/barrel of oil tax in the first article was granted to the U.S. fuels industry with oversight by the U.S. to ensure expansion of supplies for bio-fuels in the U.S. |

I am working toward having a biodiesel plant and sales-point here in my town. I currently drag a trailer 130 miles each way to bring home a couple months fuel supply, also a waste of fuel I hope to end soon. I've run a Jetta TDI on 100% biodiesel all summer and my CRD on 50% biodiesel since I bought it in September. I bought the CRD over competing products BECAUSE of the potential to run biologically derived fuel. Guys, anybody who wants to run such fuels will need to make some noise about wanting it in their neighborhood. Unless suppliers hear there is a market, they won't go out of their way to get it for you. Talk it up, make sure you ask for it every time you fill up, and better yet, start a co-op to make/distribute it yourself. If you can get it by driving 20 miles, or even 130 miles, it is MUCH more efficient to bring back a trailer load than just one tankful. And if you have a big enough group of folks to share the load, you can get it delivered economically, all you need is a suitable tank to take delivery. |

This is a great list of online resources: http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/onlineresources/ I do warn people, however, making your own is pretty easy - but there exists HUGE potential for error. LITTLE THINGS can make bad fuel, and the CRD is not as forgiving as say an old Mercades 300... I am not fond of "homebrew" for that reason, I just can't stomach the risk in my $25k vehicle... 
In the older rigs, you can burn almost anything...

I found another site, which seems to me a very thourough site, that discusses energy independence. They discuss fuel efficiency, biofuels, nuclear power, and all sorts of things.
