So it sounds like they have just cultivated a strain of bacteria to produce diesel instead of alcohol. Article is weak on technical details, and high on wishy washy feel good coolness.

Great, another food product being burned for fuel. Now granted, there are a lot of sugar cane fields lying fallow, but not in this country so we would still have to import.

When will the idiots learn that there is a finite capacity to feed the planet and using food stock for fuel simply reverberates done the supply chain. Haven't we learned anything with the Ethanol debacle after turning a surplus of corn into a shortage.

Not to mention conversion of tropical forests to sugar cane plantations. Cut down the trees that filter carbon out of the air to replace them with plants we burn for fuel.

Wast Management, BFI, and Viola Environmental should be Funding the Research to turn garbage into oil instead of using food stocks.

Oh Wait, they will sit back and wait until the Government uses our Taxes to Pay for the Research to Develop the Oil Bugs that eat garbage.
Then they will cry that the bugs cost too much, the equipment costs too much and they need Government Subsidies coming from our tax dollars.
Then they will pay Al Gore under the table to fly around in his jet telling every one that if the Land Fills don't process the Garbage into oil with bugs the Tectonic Plates will crack and we will suffer Earth Quakes along with Tsunomies that will flood New York City.
George Soros will blame George Bush for the Land Fill Problem and will then fund a Michael More produced movie on the Environmental inpact that will happen if the Oil Bugs don't go to work in the Land Fills.

Then, due to Voter Outrage, Waste Management, BFI, and Veolia Environmental will get the Oil Bugs and Equipment for free and have subsidies to pay for the labor to run the process, all funded by our tax dollars.
Then the Land Fill companies will pocket the money from the Oil produced by the Oil Bugs as an overhead because it cost more to supply the garbage to feed the Oil Bugs instead of dumping it into the Land Fill.

Besides, why pay for something that will make money when you can get it for next to nothing and cash the checks.

Outstanding commentary warp2, I bet you did not vote for DD from your state either. Pretty
sad we can not seem to do what needs to be done, like we used to as a country.

so why don't we grow sugar cane in the USA..or Sugar beets?

both make a great crop for ethanol..much better than corn..

and what food is made from sugar cane...sugar...but not in USA..sugar is manly from corn syrup..anybody for high frutcose corn syrup? not sure about sugar beets maybe these are made into sugar..

just my 2 cents. I'll keep amking BD from wvo.

Boy, wouldn't reflex have had fun with this one. Crop fuels are here to stay. I can't belive that there could still be anyone who thinks that there is a global food shortage because corn is used for ethanol. Sure, field corn has gone from $2 a bushel to $6 a bushel in the past couple of years, so what. Do you know anyone who eats field corn? The so-called tortilla riots in mexico were not because anyone was starving but because they did not like the slightly higher price of their tortillas (most of which are not made from animal grade field corn incidently) Historicay it has been used almost exclusively for animal feed. At present the amount of corn used for ETOH production is approaching 30% of all us corn production. Even if 100% of the crop dedicated to ETOH were taken out of the animal feed supply, do you think that the world would suffer or benifit from 30% less fat and meat in their diets? However as it happens only 50% of the dry weight of corn can be used for fermentation, the remainder is a very high quality animal feed with protien and nutrients more easily digestible by livestock, making it an animal feed about as cost efective as the original whole kernal corn that it came from, for close to a zero net loss.
How much of a reduction in sugar from their diets could human-kind stand? I think that it is great if sugar crops are used for fuel instead of making the world fat. If sugar consumption were reduced by even 10% the savings in diabetes healthcare alone would more than pay for all the fuel produced.
I can't wait for some of these microbes in the initial post to be availible on ebay. Supposedly there are already several universities which have developed bacteria strains that digest cellulosic matierial to simple sugars or alcohol. Honda supposedly has a working proof of concept plant in Japan and testing the bugs viability in the enviroment in case they escaped from a production plant.

Because high fructose corn syrup always wins the race to the spare tire just above the belt, this helps slow kids and adults down
That way we all sit down and watch more TV that keeps the advertising dollars flowing to the Corrupt News Media Complex :P :P :P :P :P
Also our kids play more Video Games that keep that industry going and the employers have to give them Blackberries just to make them work on the job :P :P :P :P :P :P
Sugar from sugar cane and sugar beats turns into ENERGY gets us off our BUTTS and we watch less TV, participate in REAL SPORTS, and go out with our JEEPS and EXPLORE NATURE
To put it simply high fructose corn syrup is a VAST INDUSTRIAL CONSPIRACY to make us all into LAZY SHEEP :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
Soda Pop is the biggest use of high fructose corn syrup and another user of CO2 made from our natural gas supply, give it up, drink juce  :!:  :!:

Nope, had a nice juicy elk steak last night, cooked on my grill. Better for you than beef, and tastier to.

In WA state, a new biodiesel refinery is just about finished that is going to ship in palm oil from Brazil to convert to biodiesel and sell to people as a "green" fuel. Nevermind that that amount of pollution created by loading the oil onto ships, shipping it 5,000 miles to Washington, then refining it, completely negates the environmental benefit of using biodiesel in the first place.

I'd hazard a guess that I've burned more biodiesel than 95% of the folks on the forum (my tank is 3/4 full of B99 right now). I just don't like scams where someone claims to be doing something for the environment (like making biodiesel from sugarcane) when they are actually making a much bigger mess elsewhere.

This has nothing to do with anything but products with cane sugar taste better. I'm a proud Coke-a-Cola junky and given the choice I'll drink the Coke made with cane sugar over the high fructose crap anyday.

I definitely know that the Biodiesel I burn isn't necesarily over-all better for the environment than Dino-diesel. There are trade offs (less polutants vs less farmland) but on one issue there is a clear advantage:

My biodiesel is made here in AMERICA, by Americans and sold (mostly) to Americans.

Money trails are like Karma...think about it.

Diet coke for me too. I used to be one of the phone support techs. Yea, that jobs sucks just as much as you think it does.

Anyway, I used to love the regular coke, but drinking all that sugar plus not really moving at work for hours on end... Made Jim a fat guy. I'm thankful that I've dropped about 40 lbs, but I still would like to lose about another 15-20 that just persists on me. No more regular for me, thanks! And I try to avoid the HFCS wherever I can, but the darn stuff is in EVERYTHING these days.

This alone is reason enough for me to move to non-soda based drinks. I have been trying, but as we all know, when you've got a spouse its their way or the highway. The spouse can consume three large meat lovers pizzas, three liters of pepsi, and a chocolate bundt cake and still be 134LB. sensored word!!

I have been cutting my sweet tea (yes, we are southern) with 50% unsweet or water to reduce sugar intake. Outside work, I don't drink any soda and if I do have one, it is at lunch.. and I limit the refills.

Regardless it seems we have plenty of sugar in the world. I do not forsee it ending overnight, but we are poised to turn Brazil into the next OPEC for Ethanol the way things are going.

It really irritates me that companies, instead of looking toward the betterment of the society as a whole, will sit and wait on things until they can get it all paid for and get rich off it.

You know this is the exact reason WHY I dropped the Apple bandwagon (don't tell Apple, I like getting paid) and use Linux at home now. The blatant consumerism that has a strong hold on us as a society has to end somewhere. I like to think it ends when I skip the commercials on the TiVo, and remove them entirely before archiving my recordings to DVD via the Linux boxes. (Side note: yes, Virginia, YOU CAN make a DVD with only 256MB and a 1.0GHZ Pentium III).

I find that Biodiesel has the same open source feel to it, and part of the problem is that marketers cannot call any biomass product a biodiesel; due to the associations the name has with back yard brewers. This is why I believe GTL and BTL were the chosen names for Shell's Natural Gas and Biomas Diesel fuels. Sundiesel is another name. The term biodiesel, while applicable to these new products, isn't adopted largely because no company wants to actually talk about the process to which they make their fuel. Where as, with biodiesel -- generation 1 fuel, at least -- that's the whole concept. Sharing the trade secret so anyone can get in the production game, at home or on a commercial scale.

I'm living the pipedream; hoping that people will one day start compiling source code for fun and brewing fuel from the grease they made their southern style breakfast from in the background. A boy can dream, rite?
