It is pretty common to run the return line from the by-pass filter to the oil fill. And in the case of the 2.8l CRD convenient, however is there any down side to this? I've got a swivel fitting for the screw cap but wondering if the trickle of oil to the top of the engine would present an issue. Talking to VM was useless, there filter system is perfect.

My other thought was to drill and tap the fumoto fitting to add a return but the oil fill would be shorter and simpler.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts on a bypass filter is they rob, bypass, oil that wouldotherwise go to lubricating the engine  If your concerned about cleaner oil first cut down on the soot from the egr and then use good quality filters and change them oftern. The Mobil 1 filter has gotten goo reviews here.

Typically they rob oil that is getting returned to the sump as the pumps pump more than it can handle and a lot gets dumped past the relief valve. Also the amount going to the bypass is a small trickle and it is a slow, steady process unlike the fullflow filter. If you cut open used oil filters you'd be surprised at what you find. I'm just not as familiar with the VM as other manufactures engines.

As for the full flow filters I've gotten good test results with the EA034 Amsoil's. I typically run engines for 100+kmi and found that by-pass filtration is a real benefit. I just need to find what works best for the libby.

So, I was under the impression that the small amsoil system that mounts to the standard filter location returns the oil to the same. Not that it's of any gain or benefit, but that's a really clean way to do it (IMHO). Why would you want to return the oil to the filler cap location? that introduces the need for a pressure gradient to lift it to the top of the engine and some potentially ugly plumbing right on top of the engine.

Dan

P.S. If I could justify it, I'd LOVE a bypass system, but just 'cause i like toys and hate getting oily and don't trust the average technician to do it right.

You are correct that the puck (typically a Perma-cool cooler adapter) is a clean install which I use on other vehicles. On the KJ the oil filter extends down quite a bit and to add a couple of inches would put it close to the skid if not in contact. It could be modified. I wanted to install the filter in a more easily accessible location than below the vehicle which poses running the lines up and dealing with the exhaust on the right or the driveshaft on the left. If I tap off the pressure sensor port or the pan port on the front (anyone know if this is pressurized or not??) to the front I could return to the top. Or run back down to the bottom. I just figured I wasn't the first to attempt this on the little diesel and wondered if anyone encountered any issues or had suggestions.

return line to the cam index port - to the right of the filler neck on the side of the valve cover casting - intake side

The only person I know that did a bypass filter, did the relocation of the main oil filter with the amsoil kit. The device screwed on where the oil filter normally goes and relocated the main oil filter and a bypass filter next to it. A return line took it all back to the engine.

This is what I'm using on my cummins, and I also plan to do the same on my 2.8 VM.
