Anyone running Rotella synthetic instead of mobile one? Seams to be priced better but it is a Shell product not some off brand.

Shell ROTELLA® T Synthetic 5W-40
Shell ROTELLA® T Synthetic is a fully synthetic heavy-duty diesel and gasoline engine oil developed especially to meet the requirements of North American driving. The exclusive Shell formulation offers users exceptional performance and protection in combination with enhanced fuel economy potential over conventional 15W-40 motor oils. This synthetic multigrade engine oil meets the service requirements of virtually all four-stroke cycle diesel and gasoline engine manufacturers.

I have a 05 CRD with 4000 miles, changed oil last week from mobil 1 to amsoil 5w40w, have noticed 2mpg better and smoother throttle responce. I will be changing trans, transfer, front and rear ends to amsoil within the next week.

The manual says to use 0w-40 Mobil One and that 5w-40 Mobil One is acceptable. I'm no expert on warranties but if they wanted to push the issue on an engine warranty couldn't they test the oil and claim abuse by not using the proper oil? The manual does give a specific brand and weight, just a thought.

The was an act congress passed years ago that said they couldnt void warranty for using none OEM parts lubricants or filters. The key is the API ratings of the oil. If the meet the spec your covered. For me the confusion is in what specs the oil has to meet and what are are choices. I get free oil changes so it should be interesting to see what brand oil and weight oil the dealer uses.

Being totally unfamiliar with synthetic oils is it safe to assume you can mix brands like you could with dyno oil? Say your a quart low and you can't find Mobile 0W-40 or 5w-40 can you use say Rotella-T 5w-40 to top it off?????

Amsoil can be topped off with any oil you choose that meets the spec, synthetic or otherwise. Not sure about Mobil 1. Penske has his hand in the VM Motori engines and he is also into Mobile 1, coincidence? Amsoil has always warrantied their oils to the hilt, and back you the same way if the auto companies try something on you. The boss at Amsoil takes it personally if someone disses his product. He refused delivery on a big motorhome once when the head mechanic dissed his stuff when he brought it in to be installed in the RV. Would only take delivery if the mechanic went to school on synthetic oils, at guess where.
Have used Amsoil in all of my rigs for 25 years, the first went 277,000 miles with the original engine still running strong when I sold it. That rig had the 100,000 mile oil change setup on it. The second is now owned by my son with 170,000 as still strong.
Going to do the same here, Amsoil says that they have 3 oils that meet VM Motori's spec., and it looks like they have everything else also.

Forgot to mention, if you go to the Amsoil site you'll see some tests done with a bunch of synthetic oils. Mobile 1 looks to be midrange to mediocre on just about everything.

I did however notice that there was no comparison to Royal Purple. I have used that in my truck before I sold it with 0 problems.

Looked at a review in Street Thunder Magazine, looks like Royal Purple is good stuff, gave it an 8 when compared to other like products. Looked in the Mobil 1 site. They make a Heavy Duty 5W40 Mobil Devcon 1 oil for diesels, it has the higher TBN numbers needed with the higher sulfur fuels here, wonder why that of the 5W40 Truck/RV oil wouldn't be the oil of choice. Sure look like they would be better oils around our turbo engines.

here what I found on the two oils in owners manual.

Mobil 1 Truck & SUV if no 0-40 available

SAE Grade 5W-40
Viscosity, ASTM D 445
cSt @ 40ºC 102
cSt @ 100ºC 14.8
Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 151
Sulfated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 1.35
Total Base #, mg KOH/g, ASTM D 2896 12
Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 -45
Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 226
Density @ 15ºC kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.854

Mobil 1 0W-40

SAE Grade 0W-40
Viscosity, ASTM D 445
cSt @ 40º C 80
cSt @ 100º C 14.3
Viscosity Index, ASTM D 2270 187
Sulfated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 1.2
HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC ASTM D 4683 3.6
Pour Point, ºC, ASTM D 97 -54
Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 236
Density @15º C kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.855

Here is RottellaT 5-40

cST @ 40* C 90
cST @ 100* C 15.0
Viscosity index 176
Pour Point -40 C
Flash Point 222 C
TBN 11.5

The Shell product is thinner at low temps and thicker at high temps than the Mobil 5-40 product with a 21 point better viscosity index number. I would use the Shell product over the Mobil in 5-40 grade. Don

My first oil change in the CRD was at 5,707 miles on 09/03/05. I purchased the 0W40 Mobil 1, but will most likely give the 5W40 Rotella-T Full Synthetic a shot the next oil change. I own a 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 w/CTD and use the 5W40 Rotella-T Full Synthetic with great results at 7k---8k intervals. Based on a per-quart breakdown (the 5W40 can be purchased in 1 gal jugs) I'd only be out $24.36 for 7 quarts of the Rotella-T and $36.75 for the Mobil 1, not to mention that the 5W40 is much more readily available than the Mobil 1.

Here's a link to another site with pics of the oil change procedure :

It's called the Magnuson-Moss Act:

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/bus ... nuson-Moss

The manufacturer cannot require you to use authorized service or use only OEM products unless they can prove detrimental effect to the FTC's satisfaction.

Here is the meat of the issue, as it applies to vehicle scheduled maintenance, from the FTC, under the heading of "tie-ins"--

"Tie-In Sales" Provisions
Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.

In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty.

While you cannot use a tie-in sales provision, your warranty need not cover use of replacement parts, repairs, or maintenance that is inappropriate for your product. The following is an example of a permissible provision that excludes coverage of such things.

While necessary maintenance or repairs on your AudioMundo Stereo System can be performed by any company, we recommend that you use only authorized AudioMundo dealers. Improper or incorrectly performed maintenance or repair voids this warranty.

Although tie-in sales provisions generally are not allowed, you can include such a provision in your warranty if you can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the FTC that your product will not work properly without a specified item or service. If you believe that this is the case, you should contact the warranty staff of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection for information on how to apply for a waiver of the tie-in sales prohibition.

ArkyCRD,

Which Amsoil did you use? I was planning on using the Series 3000 but it comes in 5W-30 - is that what you used? Are you using their filters or sticking w/ Mopar?

Grywlfbg,

I'am using amsoil european 5w40 full syn. oil, sdf34 amsoil oil filter, and af1128 air filter. Changed mopar oil filter to amsoil oil filter and noticed shorter turbo lag (weird? but true)

from what i seen here on the boards the truck type weights of synthetics seem to be better than the recommended weight of ow-40.the 5w-40 dont seem to cause the egr problems that the other does.it a diesel oil rather than a oil that seem to be adapted for diesel use.also some good technical reading on oil is at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com hopes this helps.Chris

You need to look at the API ratings for the oil. I work for Freightliner, and checked on what Cat, Detroit Diesel, and Cummins say they want in their engines.

For a 4 cycle direct injection diesel, on-road application, with an EGR system and closed breather (CCV) system, using low sulfur diesel fuel, they recommend an oil with at least a CI-4 rating or Global DHD-1 rating.

Mobil 1 0W40 only has a CF rating. According to these guys, you WILL NOT use this type of oil in any of their on-road diesels. According to the above OEM's, CF oil is only for 2 cycle off-road applications, older non-direct injection or precombustion chamber diesels (older engine designs), running high sulfur diesel fuel.

Mobil 1 5W40 Truck & SUV, Shell Rotella T 5W40 Synthetic, and Amsoil 5W40 Synthetic European Car Formula, all have at least a CI-4 rating or better.

They also recommend getting an oil with the highest possible TBN number and lowest possible percent sulfated ash content.

Mitchell,

The Amsoil 5W40 Euro is not actually API certified, is it? The specs. for Amsoil are very good, you say to look for the API rating and there is no API seal on the Amsoil and there is listing in the API database for the Amsoil.

Before I flamed, I am not saying that the Amsoil is more or less quality than API certified oil, just questioning if it is API certified.

Hmmm, well, from what I remember, I went to www.amsoil.com , and viewed their datasheet for AFL 5W40 Synthetic European Car Formula. I could swear that they listed it as having a CI-4 rating, don't know if they actually have that printed on the bottle or if it actually is. I also looked at their HDD diesel oils, and my old brain might be getting them mixed up as far as the API ratings :?

By all means, double-check me on this, I don't want to be putting out bum info.

FWIW, I wholeheartedly agree with Retmil46 on using a CI-4 or DHD-1 rated oil. Don

The link:
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx

The information:
Synthetic 5W-40 European Motor Oil (AFL)
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil is specially formulated for the lubrication needs of European gasoline and diesel cars and light trucks. Formulated with advanced AMSOIL polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base stocks, premium additives and a broad 5W-40 viscosity rating. AMSOIL 5W-40 allows motorists to take advantage of the maximum extended drain intervals recommended by European automakers while providing second-to-none protection and performance in the most demanding operating conditions. http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayLicenseInfo.asp?LicenseNo=0995

Amsoil is not API licensed on a 5W-40 oil. Click on the link to see the products that Amsoil does have API ratings on.
The ratings on the Amsoil site are recommendations. I believe what is being said is that the Euro 5w-40 meets or exceeds the specs. that are required for the rating.

It is really just splitting hairs, I've seen oil test results (over 10,000 mile interval) for the 5W-40 Amsoil and the oil held up very well, it is a good oil, it just is not API certified. Better than the 0W-40 Mobil that Jeep recommends.
