As of late I have been averaging 21 to 24 mpg with my 40 mile round trip commute, that’s around 6 miles a day at 25-30mph and the rest is at 60 mph. My CRD has always been this way, 18 mpg one week 25 the next, after it hit around 40k miles it settled out to 21-24 mpg range for my commute with the occasional 18 or 19 mpg week. But on trips it’s never the same. This past weekend on the trip out I got 28.9 mpg, on the way back it got 21.4 mpg. No difference in how I drove 70-72 mph, both ways all interstate driving AC on. Round trip was 842 miles. Anyone else experience this much of a swing? |

Temperature, humidity, position of Saturn, karma, your mood.... I think they all affect mileage on the CRD's. Mine is moody too and swings between a 21 and 28mpg average. |

The only huge difference I've seen is summer v winter fuel. I usually get 19/20 in my daily commute (DC traffic) in the summer and 17/18 in the winter. Otherwise, no drastic swings here. |

This past winter was 18 - 19mpg all winter but yes I was in 4 wheel drive at least once a week all winter. I feel a little better now seeing there are others out there experiencing the same. I guess I got use to the Freightliner I drove 13 mpg empty or loaded. And the old Ford diesel was a constant 18 mpg empty at 60 mph. Really starting to hurt at $4.68 a gallon. |

My mileage has been 18 to 29 mpg by tank but has averaged 24 mpg pretty consistently when I do the whole page of gallons and miles. I think winding out the gears at full throttle does bad things to the mileage but despite my advanced age it is still fun. |

I have seen a similiar thing driving to Phoenix and back, 28.5 one way and 24 returning. Finally figured out there was a very gradual 1,000 ft elevation change. |

I drive the same road everyday. So not that much difference in road conditions, and get fuel at the same place. I had one tank that I had over 400 miles on the first half, but the wife filled and paid cash no receipt reset the trip and she could not remember how much diesel it took or what it cost. I'm sure I was looking at better than 30 mpg, I know If I get 350 out of the first half I'm looking 28 + mpg. |

I see little swings, but they are not that wide. Usually it is between 24-26. I get diesel at the same place, however. Cross country and it is all over the place. I know a headwind on the highway or driving over 75 will put a dent in the mileage. AC usage does too. |

I installed a new air and fuel filter and cleaned the map sensor (tires inflated to the max) and the most miles per tank so far is 412. That is driving 50/50 highway and city. I really thought that this little jeep would do better. We have owned this 2006 (24,000 miles) for 3 monthes now! Maybe I'm missing something or I'm out of the loop compared to others getting better mileage??? |
