Post subject:  Going to be towing - hack the muffler off?

Hello Guys,

I'm going to be towing a travel trailer and such around and I thought I'd help the old girl out and work on the exhaust. Should I just hack the muffler off my CRD or install a muffler? From what I gather, there is almost no sound difference and if I hate it it'll be easier to add the muff back on vs buying a muff and wishing I had just hacked it. So I'm looking for tips from you who have gone before me. What should I do?

Install full flow muffler like a flowmaster and air flow like K&N air filter.

Disconnect stock muffler at flange, see if you like it. takes 60 seconds and is non destructive.

Glasspack or straight pipe.

I can here the turbo spool up a little more, seat of the pants says it accelerates faster.

have you seen a cutaway of a flowmaster muffler? they have them on display at Summit Racing....one thing a flowmaster is not is a full flow muffler, they are chock full of baffles and chambers....if that's what you meant by full flow. I tend to think full flow is a straight through unimpeded muffler like a Magnaflow. no baffles, no chambers, just straight through front to back. just a heads up.

The Flowmaster is a chambered muffler and quite restrictive compared to a Magnaflow or Dynaflow. I would not put on a K&N either if you care about keeping your CRD for more than 100k miles. I've seen many oil analyses that show higher silica levels than normal using an aftermarket oiled filter, demonstrating they pass more dirt than a factory air filter.

I just cut out my muffler and replaced it with a 2.5 inch diameter pipe. It is slightly more noisy, but wow the little beast spools up way faster. I hope to see a small increase in MPG as well. I vote for the cut it off and replace it if you don't like ti. My guess is that it will stay off though.

X2. Had a muffler shop cut just upstream of the flange to install a true 2.5" flange in its place, then they bent a pipe to go all the way back to the former exit of the stock muffler and welded in place. For around 100bucks and a hour of my time, I couldn't have asked for a better mod. Slightly throatier sound, but not significantly louder, but the flow is tons better and as stated, turbo spool is faster. The muffler guy complemented the idea saying,"I can't even do the parts for a decent aftermarket muffler for that price and this looks like it flows much better."

I will end up doing the same thing. I put a Magnaflow on my turbo gasser drag car because it needed noise suppression without compromising flow. But I just put a straight pipe on my Mercedes turbo diesel and I can't tell the difference in noise. It still has a resonator, but the CRD will still have the catalyst.
