I took some time look over the AC condenser and Tranny cooler assembly mounted in front of the charge cooler, that is in front of the radiator.

The AC condenser is on top and is about 10 Inches tall and 18 inches wide. Directly below it is the 5 inch tall 18 inch wide tranny cooler. The electric fan covers, maybe 20% of the tranny cooler at best. The AC condeser gets the lion's share of the fan throughput.

The electric fan is obviously triggered by the AC condenser temperature. This answers some of the mystery of the "fan on with a slightly warm engine" case.

Anyway.... the auxillary tranny cooler that I added has nearly doubled the cooled surface area, given the small stock cooler.

The AC condenser seems tiny, for the compressor capacity and partly explains the 5 to 10% hit in mileage I get when the AC is used.

Always room for improvement, I guess !

Bill,

It just does not seem right that we only get 20 mpg.
I look at this system and shake my head.
We could be getting this mileage in a 5.9l Dodge.

Well, we can only expect 30% better mileage than another 4500 lb vehicle with the same power, roughly speaking. We do get about that when compared to the gasser libby.

anyway, the data for the dodge 5.7 is quite a bit worse

IIRC the ol' F37 didn't help the fuel mileage that it took it down 1-2mpg.

I think he was comparing to the 5.9 Cummins in a full size Ram. I have a friend with a 1998 with the 3.73 rear end (I think) and a 5 speed. He gets 24 mpg on the highway during the summer, with no load.

Okay, I see the point.
