To remove the tranny you need to rotate the crankshaft to expose the bolts on the flywheel. How can this be done against the high compression of the engine? I must be missing some obvious detail ! |

I always have used vise-grips,clamp onto the flexplate and turn away(it won't hurt your flexplate either). It's going to be that hard to turn it over, not like a 736 cu in 2-stroke V-8 diesel or a 855 cu in I6 Cummins. |

can you get to the crank bolt to turn the crank by hand with a breaker bar? |

I printed up a page off a thread but did not note what the thread author was for when I do it. Disconnect battery, remove starter Use large screwdriver to push on the flexplate gear teeth to turn the engine. Caution easy to crush fingers For reassembly insert rubber sleeve on the transmission dipstick tube before the dipstick tube. One more item: Did you get a copy of the transmission manual from Sir Sam's site? It is informative. |

Thanks for the tips. Ya I have the service manuals. They recommend rotating the crankshaft from the front of the engine. So I take it, if one of the cylinders in the compression part of the cycle, the air will leak out slowly part the valves and the piston rings? Just seems like you would have to crank pretty darn hard. Thanks again for the suggestions |
