those are not liberty engines, they look more like JK engines......but they could be out of anything...... All we know is that they are mated to manuals trans. |

See they've moved the engine oil filter cannister topside, just above the engine oil cooler exchanger - and a thermoplastic engine cover\camshaft carrier\intake manifold - and that appears to be a front-wheel drive unit |

Probably left over 07 or 08 engines - I do wonder where they've been sitting with all the rust and oxidation. Being that they're located in Toledo they could be JK or KA or KK engines but the new minivans use the same motor so that explains the front wheel drive look. |

Wait a second - is that a vacuum operated EGR valve I see?? http://dovebid.com/Auctions/Auction1169 ... image1.asp What are those "fuel like" lines going all daisy-chained along the top of the engine? |

The rail log is missing from that engine - I see 3 engine types: KJ-type FWD-type, t\p cover 'Nuther (maybe later) type, missing the Rail The all look like they were rejected due to moisture damage: oxidation on the aluminum, rust on the iron\steel stuff, maybe from a warehouse with leaky roof - damage could be cosmetic, not production-line quality, but if it was caused by temperature changes going thru dewpoint, similar damage could also be internal to crank, pistons, cylinders, camshaft(s), etc = R-E-J-E-C-T !!!!!! |

Yep thats a vacuum operated EGR, I got one here in OZ on my 2007 cherokee/Liberty, actually if you look close at all the pics there are two types of 2.8l engine there, one is used in our KJ and the other is used in our JK. EXPORT ENGINES I guess. Both show vacuum operated EGR via solenoid, its pretty dumb as I just discovered, quite tolerant of conection, disconnection. There is a bug we need to be careful of, if we use something like SEGR, we electronically satisfy everything, however on mine it is possible for the EGR to open and stay open, it is finely balanced or poor design to cause EGR to activate easily, simply unplugging it from an inactive solenoid that also has no surce vacuum applied to it activates the darn thing. Might need some metering in the supply pipe, I think it leaks in normal operation all by itself. With the ECU being electrically satisfied and vacuum not applied at all (disconnected) you might be ok for a while then whammo your kj sounds a bit like the beast from hell, deep throaty rumble. EGR valve comes WIDE OPEN all by itself and stays there, not always returning to its almost closed/closed state. Luckly reconnecting stuff got it back to where the valve itself thinks normal is. SO my recommendation is be careful and alert ........ You dont get a check engine line in this mode of operation. |

Now I thought the vacuum operated EGR valves were spring-loaded shut and opened when vacuum is applied. No vacuum, full spring force to close it. Guess you are of a different opinion... |

UFFE..... Nothing to do with knowledge of operation, THIS HAPPENED. Some may not, maybe, all have the warning so they can look out for it. Take the knowledge and use it or not, there is a certain combination of the AFC and Exhaust gas come into play. IF you have the vacuum setup its up to you whether you want to rely on it staying shut or not when its isolated in any way, I know I wont....... If you want to make sure then you know what to do. GOOD luck. |

GOOD luck. Good - then it's settled. We agree about the operation in normal circumstances, while faulty circumstances can lead to odd problems. A broken spring for instance would allow the EGR to open up. A simple plate on the EGR blocking the exhaust gasses is a solution widely used. The problem I can see is when you want to open up again, for instance if you want an MOT performed |
