This is not a direct CRD issue but as I have one I will post here.

The rear seat belts on both sides of my Liberty are badly frayed. They are both showing wear at the point where the belts go through the plastic sleeve into the floor. I almost never have anyone in the rear and the seats remain folded with the belts unused. The front belts which are used daily are fine. The only thing I can figure is that the belts rub against the plastic and have worn the fabric.

I am going to take the jeep into the dealer for an oil change (get them free for life) and see what they will do. I believe that the belt system is under warranty for life of car, if not I still have time/miles left on the 7/70 extended warranty.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Yes, mine are frayed too.
Seemed strange,
Yet another Chrysler quality innovation.

I'll have to look, hadn't noticed. Thanks for the heads-up.

Here's some fun..................

My wife is the primary driver of the Silver Bullett. My 7-year old daughter, Lexi, always rides in the back, in center.

This past Mother's Day, I invited my Mom & her husband to eat with us at O'Charley's in Richmond, KY. The Blue Bus (2007.5 RAM 3500 MegaCab) was squeaky clean and it was raining out....the CRD was already dirty, so the CRD won the trip. As my Mom and my wife got into the rear of the CRD, they both remarked the seatbelts were a little hard to pull out. No big deal, I thought....they aren't used much. Seconds later, my wife says "oh no!" and I turn around to see that mice have chewed on both the outboard seatbelts; only the center 1/3 of the seatbelt was intact. The "outermost" 2/3 were ripped to shreds.

A trip to Lowe's (for some high quality mousetraps) and seven dead mice later, we hope the sensored word are gone. Odd thing is my 2004 Dodge Neon SXT shares the same garage in the winter months.......with no ill effects.

Replacement seatbelts were about $42.00 each; when replacing them, I noticed the uppermost bolt would not start. In a nutshell, the replacement belts have an incorrect thread pitch bolt. I simply removed the correct fitting bolt from the old belts and all is well..........

Be right back.......I think I just snapped another mouse's neck like a dry twig............little sumbiches.......

Greg

UPDATE:

Finally got the Jeep over to the dealer. They are replacing both the rear belts under warranty. The SM said that the fraying was due to the fact that the body side molding panels were cutting into the belt. He also said the cutting was due to the fact that I had removed the panels to put in a stereo and had misaligned the panels so that they rubbed the belts.. I explained to him that I have never taken off the panels, had not put in a stereo (car is all stock) and showed him that the molding around the belt is sharp and due to the production process. He said that the two panels were around $ 1200 (thats twelve hundred) per pair and that Jeep would not replace them. He did say that the belts would be fixed this one time only under warranty.

I believe that the sealt belt system is warrantied for the life of the car (per law) but did not get in an argument as the belt change out will fix the problem. I will put some duct tape on the flange and that should prevent the cutting by the side panel. Since the original belts lasted over 60k miles without tape covering the opening the new belts (on order) will last my ownership of the jeep with the duct tape in place.

So, check your rear belts for fraying as the molding process which produced the sharp edge on the body panels cannot be limited to my jeep alone.
