Any advice would be helpful. Goods, bads, indifferent. Also which mods are absolutely necessary??

When you test drive look for hard starting - make them fix it before you buy it, could be air in fuel, bad fuel pump or simply a dirty fuel filter, but if its a bad pump it would be expensive.
Inspect the fuel filter head, particularly the fuel heater connector, if it looks overheated, discolored, have them replace the entire fuel head.
Check the turbo hoses for signs of oil soaking, have them replace the hoses if there is evidence, then when you buy it, take care of that with either a provent or do the EHM mod.

The CRD doesn't actually have a fuel pump, a lift pump is a mod option.

He meant the high pressure common rail pump ($$$) not a lift pump.

When you say it that way, I think you should also come with a list of mods you know and categorize them for him.

You make it sound like there is no need for any mods to the KJ, when we all know a lift pump, oil catch can and SEGR are important for long engine life. Those mods and a set of Samco boost hoses will keep him running for a good long while in a KJ CRD.

Browsing the crd tech section might be in order. It is the category right under Liberty CRD.

This approach will likely get you hundreds of thousands of miles, but a few EGR's.

I just bought a 2005 CRD last year with 36k on it. So far the check engine light (CEL) has more on time than the headlamps. Issues so far: Glow plug, CCV & turbo sensor mess, EGR, MAF.

EGR & MAF were covered under warranty even at 44,000 miles; here's how. After having the EGR replaced I kept the old part ($750 repair). 28 miles after leaving the dealer the CEL lit up. Disgusted I had the issue escalated to the service manager and Jeep regional guy. They pulled a warranty repair report that showed all Jeep factory repairs on the vehicle. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GET THIS REPORT, NOT JUST CARFAX. It showed that a few months before I purchased the vehicle the EGR had been replaced. The part itself is covered by a 1-year warranty. Because I had the old part I was able to submit it for a refund (including labor). They then covered the MAF saying it was related to EGR, but I think mostly out of embarrassment.

I've since installed the ProVent.

If this vehicle does not have a ProVent installed, I would ask them to clean the CCV, turbo inlet and hoses.
If the EGR has not been replaced I would ask them to replace it or knock $750 off the price.

I still think the CRD is a fine vehicle, but it has issues.

Yup, CP3 injection pump is an expensive replacement.

Post subject:  Consider Commitment

Without this site I would not even consider buying one. Great folks here.
Stealerships are little to no help in my view. Even under warranty.
Soon there will be better small motors coming to the USA, they are all ready out in the rest of the world, have been for years.
If you can get it cheap, think hard and long, but read here first a lot.
When I purchased mine there was a $3,000 allowance on my part to "fix it up," at 20,000 miles ie to replace the ball joints, lift pump, exhaust, fumoto valve but the suspension died or bottomed out and tires needed replacement delaying the torque converter replacement, tranny cooler, shift kit install which is where I am at now. The $3,000 is long gone.
Still to do is gauges; Trans temp, boost, exhaust gas temp. Then I want the power lost by the F37 "Customer Satisfaction" Chrysler power detune, that means chip or ECU reflash.
Will it hold up? The machine is too complex in my view, poorly executed by Chrysler.
I am at 29,000 miles now at 4+ months of ownership. I love the diesel but do not get the fuel mileage expected.
My kids love it!
I planned on keeping this until the body died and putting it in a 4 door JK, not so sure now.
If you lug heavy loads, have kids with a lot of "stuff" and have a diesel addiction, shop hard.

If you can get a good one go for it

If I bought another CRD here is what it would get ASAP:

1. Racor fuel filter head.
2. Kennedy lift pump-I'm lazy and don't ever want to drop the fuel tank.
3. Disconnect MAF and eventually get the SEGR.

Long term:
1. New torque convertor.

I'd add to that list a CCV filter or elephant hose mod.
