Does the Mopar tranny skid project the vulnerable oil filter? How tough is it? Has anyone landed on it in the rocks?

Also, I know with the engine skid there was a thicker and thinner gauge metal version. Is it like that with the tranny skid?

It's pretty thin and useless if you are in rocks at all. I have seen some that were mashed up to and around the tranny pan. The oil filter sits off to the side of the skid and is not protected by it. The filter sits up kind of high by itself and I have never come close to impacting it.

What is positive about them is that they're inexpensive and easy to obtain. If you know you're going to be beating on it, then it's probably not for you, but if you want occasional protection and piece of mind for barreling down fire roads and an occasional rock or tree branch, it may be all you need.

Or look to ALLJs at www.boulderbars.com but I think they quit making the transmission skid...and check out the For Sale Section at this forum for a used one at a good price

I've bent mine up to where it's almost touching the tranny pan - and the oil filter is still safe
(need to get a Skid Row - but I'm delaying to see if Rock Lizard comes up with something)

Thanks for the responses!

I'm not looking to beat the skids, just want protection for that 'oops' scenario.

The thing I don’t like about the skid row skid is it seems to use up too much ground clearance. I really like the fit the ASFIR skid, but not too crazy about aluminum, mainly because of the cost. I wish someone would duplicate the ASFIR design in 3/8 steel!

Maybe I'll contact ASFIR and see if they would consider steel.

Well remember that the Tranny skid also encompasses the Transfercase...so you get two for one price. The Tranny section is "vented" to let the tranny cool...they are 6mm thick...won't rust...and are light for better fuel economy.

DW, I have heard that aluminum skids sort of drag over rocks instead of sliding like steel does. Sort of the way an aluminum canoe hangs up on riffles unlike ABS (plastic) canoes. Any thoughts?

Anybody got a pic of the Mopar Tranny & Transfer Case Skids?? I went to install the set that I picked up and wouldn't you know it they would go on  . Apparently there should be some pre set nuts some where?? What I found is that I dont have any where to connect the plates to the jeep, unless I get out the drill

The skids are supposed to come with nutzerts and install tool with instruction. The skids I got from the dealer did.

Mine did too. They go in the hole, and sort of expand, then that is the threaded nut you use on I think 2 of the bolts.
