stopped by advance auto to have codes read. Got a P1140. Does anyone have any info on this code?

OBDII code P1140 = EGR throttle control circuit open.

Thanks for the quick reply. Does that mean the EGR needs to be replaced? Stuck open? I am having a SEGR assembled and should be installing in the next couple weeks.

You have a short in that circuit somewhere.

What would be the best way to find the short?

Visual check of the wires, use a multimeter to check for continuity.

I read in the SEGR builders thread that one of the guys had this code and the dealership told him he needed a new EGR. He then went on to say he shot some cleaner in the EGR and moved the valve around and the cel went out. Does this make sense?

If it is a short would it cause the EGR to not work, stick closed or stick open?

bigugly.

FYI there's two valves in the crd that can cause egr related errors  One is the actuall EGR valve and the second is the FCV or Flow Control Valve  The FCV, located in the air intake, has a butterfly plate like a gasser and the cleaning procedure you discribes is for it

Try the procedure I described (carb cleaner and gently playing with the plate), it won't hurt and just might resolve your problem. Keep us posted!

thanks BlackSmoke.

Tried it today and then something in my transmission broke. Think it's the T/C. Not good.

This sheds new light on the problem - you may have wiring harness issues, rather than a hard transmission failure

Well I cleaned the the FCV like Blacksmoke described but still have the code. Had Advanced Auto try and clear the code with their scanner with no success.

Does this code have to be cleared by the stealership?

Like gmctd said, start sounding like a wiring problem... got any racoon around? You might try unplugging/plugging those connectors, just make sure you remove the "-" from the battery first.

I am going to try having the Stealership reset the codes to see if it will clear and if that does not work I will start looking for a short. Where should I start looking? Wiring going to the EGR or FCV? Is there somewhere else I should look?

Actually I got the code coming back yesterday night while showing KeighJeigh how I made the SEGR wiring: i had unplugged the main connector on the ECU (the one on the top) to showed the wires, and after putting it back and starting the Jeep... got P1140!!!

This morning I did the following 2 or 3 times: removed that plug, bang it on some hard surface, twisted the wires back toward the plastic connector, reinstalled it and reset the code, and the last time the reset worked and the code disappear

I think in my case I might have push one of the pin inside the connector while I was take some voltage measurement.
I would start on that connector if I were you, then if no success would look carefully at the Control Valve one. It can only be in that area: the wires are going out of the ECU into the sensors, nowhere else so concentrate your visual examination in that area!
Good luck, and do look for mice or other rodent by removing the plastic cover and looking at any "bed" or brown little leftover at the far end of the top of the engine, there's a perfect spot there for making some warm bedding

Having it scanned by Mr Moservice will also exacly pinpoint the problem as they run the diagnostics for that DTC

Well I took the CRD to the stealership to scan for the P1140 code.

thats what came up and all they said is it looks like it needs a new EGR valve. They only quoted $340 to replace the EGR (thats parts and labor). Didn't sound to bad to me.

My questions is will the SEGR eliminate this code?

If it does I will not even think about replacing the EGR and just get my SEGR installed.

Any input is appreciated.

It is probably not your EGR valve but your EGR Flow Control Valve. This is the one with the motorized throttle plate in the intake. I had P1140 and that's what it was. So did oldnavy. Tell them to do themselves a favor and swap that with a known good unit before they go tearing into the EGR valve. This is much easier. I don't know if the SEGR will eliminate the code, because the SEGR still uses the FCV when in park.

That would make sense since blackcrd had the code also and cleaning the FCV worked for him/her. I tried cleaning it and it did nothing for me.

How much did the repair cost you?

I will discuss this with the stealership on Monday.

Thanks for the info.

CATCRD,

Got another question for you. What was the failure mode for the FCV under the P1140 code? Did it just stick open?

I have been driving with the code for a while now and the jeep seems to be driving ok.
