| Post subject: | AFE ProGuard Air Filter |
I was just sold one of these (OEM drop-in replacement) by Diesel Power Products in Oregon, not realizing it is the same basic design as a K&N which is known to provide inadaquate filtration for turbodiesels. DPP claims 20% better airflow than stock with no loss in filtration effectiveness. (They claim K&N flows 40% better than stock.) Your thoughts? BTW, DPP claims that even at just a 20% concentration, biodiesel eliminates intake manifold "build-up" with EGR operational. Anyone have an idea about whether what goes out the exhaust ports when biodiesel is burned retains the solvent properties of unburned biodiesel? Best Wishes, DOC |

| Post subject: | I yanked my Wife's K&N from her TDI.... |
....when I saw light through it and threw in a paper one. When I did the research on AFE ProVGuard 7 I bought two, one for my CRD and one for my Wife's TDI. AFE has better construction and a more secure media than K&N that can get screwed up with a big enough piece of trash or a bug hitting it. I got tired of having to massage the media of K&N filters every time I cleaned them just to get rid of the holes I saw when I held them up to light. |

Do the research. Only trust yourself! AFE with Pro Guard was the only filter to pass the Cummins filtration reqirements. I know this because I used to be a Cummins dealer. It is a very good filter, but I would also only suggest using it in the proper environment. My CRD is mainly on the street and see very little off road dust/dirt ETC... My wife drives it daily, and it has better airflow now that I put in the v6 airbox and AFE. Mileage has gone up also. Like I said--Do the research yourself. It is nothing like K&N so please don't make that comparison. Pete |

I have used one and saw zero changes. No gain in mpg or acceleration. It also filtered the same as a paper filter per my oil analysis. Unless you use it for a lifetime it's a waste of money. |

We'll, I will use mine for a lifetime. And---If your oil analysis says it does just as good of a job as a paper filter.... That's exactly what I'm after. You can hear my turbo and feel the extra air. It's not a tremendous amount, but between the v6 airbox and filter, it does make a difference. My in town mileage last tank was 21.78. That's pretty good. PK |

I took mine out and put the paper back in after I blew a CEL light a day after oiling it. The stealership took care of the CEL with a new MAF and EGR valve under warranty. |

Any time you oil a filter like the Pro Guard, you need to do it like you are THEE BEAN COUNTER FROM HELL and use very little oil. |

Does the V6 airbox use the same size filter as the stock CRD filter? |

Yes it does. When you buy a Pro Guard go for the Pro Guard 7 series that has extra filtration capacity to accommodate the diesel which uses at least 60% more air. Gasser filter will fit, but will not flow as well because it has less filter material. I suspect that that is why some members are disappointed, they did not read all the information and got tight with their money. Go with the AFC Pro Guard 7 recommendation for the CRD. |

I hear you! I thought I was pretty stingy with the oil. I ran an Upsolute cone for 150k on my old TDI and didn't change the MAF until after more than 100k on the filter. I didn't notice any performance increase or better mileage with the ProGuard so for 10 bucks every six months/every other oil change, I'll just keep swapping paper rather than take a chance on $800 worth of emissions gizmos. |

Warp, I got the 73-10072, which is specifically labeled for the '05-'06 Liberty CRD. Is that the one you are referring to? Thanks again, DOC |

I almost got trapped by the low price of the other one that does not have the 7 in front and is not the Pro Guard "7". |
