I don't know if there was a link posted already but I think this is worth looking at:

A Jeep I would love to have and the sad part is everyone gets it but the US.

Nor is the "Sarge", as pictured in that article. Honestly, I'd really rather have the Sarge. No AC where I live would just suck :)

It appears to me that the biggest obstacles to getting small diesels into the US market is:

Fed and state government likes the fact that you have two very neat piles of fuel tax dollars. OTR trucks use diesel and cars use gas. Letting in small diesels muddies the water. Government hike of diesel fuel tax is basically ignored by US consumers. The law makers count on the fact that few recognize that diesel fuel tax is an easy way to INDIRECTLY tax consumers since the higher diesel tax gets passed on as higher prices.

The other obstacle is that a lot of the U.S. refineries are exporting a rather large part of the diesel fuel capacity. Its more profitable to sell overseas than in the U.S. That tends to drive up the price in the US.

Add to that list: The EPA are a bunch of chicken-little grannies that only nationalize the policies that CARB pulls out of their arses. They have been on an anti-diesel crusade ever since the invention of soot.

The problem? ALL combustion creates soot. Do I think it's a bad thing? Sure, it creates smog when the particles are too small to be easily seen, and so small, that they can remain in the air for hours or even days. Gasoline cars have particles this small, but CARB doesn't want to recognize this fact and that diesels are actually HELPING the air due to what is known as the "weekend smog effect".

Simply put: If you can SEE the smoke (soot particles) then they CANNOT hurt you. The particles are too heavy to remain in the air for more than a few seconds, and fall to ground as simple dirt. The human lungs can filter down to about 10 microns in size.

Diesel particulates are (on average) 30 microns in size. That's like trying to swallow a basketball whole. It's just not gonna happen.
Gasoline particulates from those ultra-clean Honda or Toyota engines? Yup, LOTS of particulates, but they are ALL less than 5 microns in size.

Now... Who's causing more emphysema, that Civic hatchback, or the semi?
