| Post subject: | Drivetrain Clunk? |
About a month ago I finally put 245/75/R16 Dueler REVOs on my CRD. Love the tires. Immediately after installing the tires (no lift kit yet) I noticed a disturbing sound coming from what I think is the drivetrain or maybe CV joints. It happens most when starting from a dead stop or stopping and when turning around 5-15 MPH. It sounds like a definite clunk or pop from underneath the Jeep. At first I though it might be a little tire rub on the fenderwell, but that's not the case. I also tried rolling downhill slowly in neutral, then hitting the brakes. No clunk at all. Can't be tire rub or suspension. Any ideas?? Should I have the dealer look at it?? |

If you are certain the tires don't touch anything...then I have no clue what that could be. Just having different tires on there won't change any CV angles or suspension geometry. Nothing has changed except the size of the tire. So if they aren't touching anything at all, then you have a ghost. If you go to the dealer they might fuss about you having non-stock equipment on there. |

If you have the problem going straight it probably has nothing to do with the tire size as 245/70/16 are the same height as 225/75/16 (stock size} . If you can duplicate the problem let the dealer look at. Since Jeep bumped up the Sport from 215/75/16 to 225/75/16 I don't know why they didn't bump up the 235/70/16 to 245/70/16. On that note I am going to stick with 225/75/16's as there are a lot of choices now for replacement tires in that size. If you want to be sure its not rubbing put some chalk on the pinch weld and other points that the tire may hit and see if it gets rubbed off. |

| Post subject: | clunking sound |
I have only owned my crd for a few months and just a few weeks ago I started hearing a slight clunk in the rear just when I came to a complete stop the then when I would start moving again I would here and feel a little noise in the front like right under my feet and a little to the right. I took it to the dealer and they drove it about 8 times in and out of the shop and they heard it too then they put on the alignment rack to look at all the suspension real close and the only thing they thought it could be was the front passenger strut so I will have that replaced but I still think the noise will happen in the rear end all the u joints and the drive shaft seem to be very tight and the rear shocks and springs seem to be seated ok so it just may be a Jeep thing it kind of sounds like the chassis settleing down when it comes to a complete stop. I will report on the strut replacement to see if that fixes the noise in the front. kccrd |

We all have brake drums inside our rear rotors for the E-Brake. |

I was thinking of the drums that are used to stop a vehicle, not hold it while in park. Ah, you knew that. |

Just brought my crd home from the dealer they replaced the right front strut, looks more like a shock with a coil spring on it but anyway it did not correct the clunking sound at all still does it just the same. But what the heck now I have a brand new strut up front. unplugged the egr the other day to see just what would happen it quit making those funny sounds when you accelerate and it shifts much better and it down shifts like clouds. does not hunt for overdrive any more and it seems to stay in the proper gear until the next one is really needed like when you reach highway speed then it goes into 5th gear. makes a little more power and it coasts a lot easier and the mileage is better. I am taking a 1200 mile round trip in the next few days and I will keep very close track of the mileage it gets. I did plug it back in when I took it to the shop and asked the mechanic if the cel was on and it was not so when the egr is plugged back in it seems to have cleared itself. |

WE have brake drums Take a good look at your real hubs. the parking brake uses a drums because they work better for a parking brake |

I think that has been established. I wonder if those were the drums he was talking about. Why of course they were. |

Let's see...you installed 245/75/16s without a lift and heard the noise immediately after that? Your tires are too big for a non-lifted KJ and are most likely hitting more than a few things. Most likely hitting the plastic covered pinch weld in the back of the front fender well...there is a metal pinch weld behind the plastic liner |

I actually solved the problem many months ago. After going to two different dealers who said that it was "normal", I finally found one that "heard" the sound and did something about it. It ended up being very loose motor mounts, right side if I remember correctly. They tightened it up and the sound went away forever. I think it was just coincidence that it started after I put on the new tires. |

Yep - shows we have some folks that use the search function though!!! As for the noise - suspicious that it happens decelerating and turning - I agree with the pinch weld theory in the front on that one. |

colo kevin I just took my crd into the shop and told them to check the passenger side engine mount the mechanic said just by looking at it he could tell it had been moving by the way the threads looked on the center bolt he tightened the nut about 3 to 4 turns got it tight and that took care of the clunking sound completly both when I take off from a stop and when I come to a complete stop. He said he was going to notify Star tech by email to let them know of the fix for the clunking sound. |

Yup, worked like a charm for me. Sounds like the guy on the assembly line didn't drink his coffee that day. Glad I could help. |
