| Post subject: | Transmission Skid? |
I'm looking to purchase a mopar transmission skid to cover the vulnerable oil filter on the CRD. From what I understand the engine skid that comes stock with the CRD is not as heavy duty as the mopar engine skid. My question is can the transmission skid be mounted to the stock engine skid or only to the heavy duty mopar engine skid. My only concern is protecting the oil filter and I don't want to spend the cash on the engine skid also if I can help it. |

yes - the skids are the same design - except for the thickness (well - almost - the 'new' engine skid has some extra bolt holes up front for some attachment that the 05's don't have - I think the 08's may use - but rear to tranny skid is the same) |

Bought my skid plates months ago and installed them before a hunting trip. Glad we did it. It took 3 tries to get the right ones and it is lucky I had a torch to expand the holes. (Bullshirt!) The skids are heavy duty. Price was not too bad. |

If you are still looking for skid plates, I bought mine from www.jparts.com. It is actually a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer in PA. and they give you a little bit of a discount. The guy who runs the site was real nice on the phone. I went through the same issues trying to figure out which one will fit, and even though I was sent the wrong one the first time, he had UPS come back and pick it up on their dime...I didn't have to worry about a thing. This place was so easy to work with. |

The mopar tranny skid plate is a verry solid unit, and it easily clears the largest of oil filters, and also funto valves (with nipples). I have Nailed my tranny skid on rocks in violent ways, with nary a dent. That said there are 2 part numbers for the skid plates, one of witch does not include the hardware, and one that does. The hardware is a nutsert tool, 2 nutserts and 2 bolts. Some folks just drill through the cross member and use normal hardware to mount up the tranny skid. I ordered the one with the hardware (no part numbers, sorry but it's more expensive) as i wanted to use the nutserts, and figured it's the easiest and quickest way to get it mounted. If you dont plan on removing the skid plate, there's no reason to get the nutserts and so forth, they are expensive. (from mopar) You don't need to hold your bolts from the top if you use the nutserts but some folks have trouble installing the nutserts, and some folks have even had them fail to hold the skid plate on (witch i believe is due to improper installation) The mopar skidplate for the transmission appears to lower your clearance however, and i believe the aftermarket plates do not (or at least not as much), such as those form all j's and skid row. |
