Post subject:  Oil Consumption

I have an 05 CRD that I'm a little concerned with how much oil is being consumed. I have noticed that it is using just over a
quart of oil in about 3,000 miles. I have added a provent, and the provent was completely covered in oil in a very short time
period. The provent seems to have made no change in the amount of oil that is being consumed. The 05 has not been F37'd.

There are no signs of leaking and no oil spots under the jeep. I know diesels can consume some oil, but the amount and short
period of time has me concerned. I have a 06 CRD and can go the full 6,000 miles between oil changes and it does not consume
any oil that is noticeable on the dipstick.

Any thoughts.

The dipstick is marked MIN and MAX and many make the mistake of filling to the MAX :shock: Try putting in the specified 6.3 quarts and see where it comes on the stick and scratch a line and remember this is FULL :wink:

I got the my CRD a few months ago and I checked the oil a lot when I first got it and it never used any. I just did the first oil change to Rotella T full syn 15w40 and its been cold here in MI and not after 3000k miles its down to the min mark. I guess I'll leave it at the min mark and check it a lot to make sure it doesn't get any lower... any other ideas would be great too !

Also like mentioned earlier, check the condition of your Air Filter. If it is clogged you will suck oil and fill your provent.

Post subject:  Always check with the Engine cold and park in...

....the same place. Oil can collect in the upper parts of the engine and take hours to drain back. To find out if your dipstick is telling the whole truth next time you change the oil. First add the 6.3 Qts of oil, start the engine and drive it around until it is warmed up and park it. Check the oil level the next morning and note where it wets the dipstick. It could be something as simple as not having the dipstick tube all the way into the block or pan where it goes in.
After you check all of that stuff above and items in the other posts including the air filter, you may have your rings carboned up and you could fix that with a good road trip. Many years ago we would hook up the old 4020 John Deere's to the Dynometer and put them to work and reseat the rings that were carboned up. Oil consumption would drop and power output would increase a bunch.

Beats pulling the engine down :idea:

I find that Rotella T 5-40 blue bottle has higher consumption than m1 0-40 or m1 tdt 5-40. I don't think i am alone in this. I do my 6.5qt (i use a m1-301 filter) and with rtsyn it ate 2/3 qt in 5k the others have only been about 1/4-1/3 in 7k. there are other variables that could have lead to this consumption other than the oil itself, but;

I feel that m1 tdt is the best oil that I can find locally/easily and would use it regardless; it's only a few dollars more than rtsyn and it's just peace of mind for me. I am working on extended OCI's and figured i'd get longer oci's faster by working up with tdt.

The only reason I say any of this, is simply to point out that, although I don't use rtsyn any more, I do think it is a great oil, and would recommend it in a heartbeat, if you don't experience larger consumption (like many have in other motors) or do, but don't mind, it's possibly the easiest to find and one of the best 5-40's in the world. And it's defiantly one of the most affordable HIGH quality 5-40's around. No, you may not get 30k oci's from it. But you were not going to run it that long anyway, were you?

The next time you buy your rtsyn make sure it's the newer cj-4 and not ci-4, same price, better oil.
