This is my first post. I am considering my first JEEP and need some feedback. Currently own a 2003 F350 6.0 and need to downsize but like a diesel. Anything I should be aware of before proceeding? A lot of negative reviews on other sites especially about failing window regulators and lots of in shop time.
This one has 49000 miles and is in good shape but needs tires. Dealer promised NAV disc that was missing as well as another key.

I love my little diesel - however do expect that you'll have to do some work on it - Chrysler cut corners - and while all of the issues are fixable - most dealers are clueless.
Each dealership had 1-2 CRD's - and the Techs got a 20 minutes video on diesels.
If you read the CRD tech - you will know more about the problems and solutions than the dealership.
First mod needs to be EHM or Provent - the CCV system dumps oil into the intake manifold. And if you have any stubbles or hard starts - a lift pump - fuel system is vacuum engine to tank and the fuel head tends to leak - lift pump can look factory (it's already 1/2 wired and the Cummins pump is a drop in).

and Welcome to LOST - great site - really good information.

Thanks for the info. I am reading over lots of info here and other owner reviews to get a better handle on what I have to look forward to. The more responses to this thread, the better :)

I have a 06 and have had a great time with it. I am probably one of the ones that have beat on theirs the hardest. I have a recall on a clock spring before I took delivery, teh tranny recall, ball joint recall, rear brakes, 3 sets of tires, one day of HPDE at the Nuerburgring, 2.5 years of driving the autobahns at speeds up to 129mph or so, several auto-x events, towing a trailer and race car all over Germany, off roading and it have NEVER left me stranded. The KJ did go into no-boost mode but I turn it off and on and no problems. It did through a CEL after driving 150miles very very hard and the EGR was replaced, sorry forgot that one. It is about to get new front brakes and in 6 months new Koni adjustable shocks on it. The loacl Jeep dealer in Germany did all the oil changes, only becasue they did a great job and I could trust them. I would not trade my KJ for anything, right now. Although I did look at a 2008 MB R320CDI 4MATIC tonight.

Most Jeeps are described by a two letter designation for their series. The 02-07 Liberties were the KJ. The 08+ are the KK.

I love my CRD, but don't expect a lot of support from most dealers.

Am I gonna need a lot of dealer help in the form of constant repairs in general?

No - most people use the dealers due to Warranty issues - if you're out of warranty - I wouldn't go close to one.
If you do need mechanical help - look for a shop that services Cummins or Sprinter vans - they're diesels - the techs should have a clue.

basically the CRD is reliable- definitely no major issues - the engine should last 250K easily probably 500k - The tranny is more of a concern - tranny hard parts are strong - torque converter is the weak link - if your just driving it should be okay - if you're towing especially with a chip - look for the Suncoast converter.

the fuel system is probably the biggest question - most people do not have problems - but if they do - the dealerships under warranty have been spectacularly unsuccessful and I do understand - for a Tech unfamiliar with vacuum systems and trained to read trouble codes - trying to solve this could be challenging - fortunately LOST has some great diesel mechanics online (not me - I just read posts) - The fuel problem solution is a lift pump (about $200 and 3 hours) and/or a Racor fuel head ~$250 & the same amount of time

Also - everytime we take a poll - the majority of people do not have problems - but the few who have - have driven some really good solutions.

Or to put this in perspective - I bought mine in Aug 05 - new 2 miles on it - I'm now at 64500. because it was 1st year I got the 100k warranty.

I've had 2 Diesel issues - EGR fail (about 1/3 of the 05 folks had this - replacement has not failed) and an oil cooler gasket blew - replaced under warrranty.

I also had the all KJ recall on Balljoints and the Diesel recall F37 (my tranny had no problems but they swapped the TC anyway)

all other changes have been self induced - lift/tire/armor/bumpers (and I put in the lift pump for a safety factor)

One of the posts I read on this site mentioned getting a VIP report from the dealer that shows all records of service that a dealership has performed which is like the OASIS that Ford has. does anybody on this site have the capability to run a VIP if I provide the VIN?

We have a 2006 Limited CRD which we bought used with 20Kmiles on it. Now have 42K miles on it. No problems at all. And we beat it pretty good, just returned from a 8,500 mile, 7 week trip from California to the Canadian arctic and Alaska ( http:www.drivingtothearctic.blogspot.com) At least 1,000 of the miles were on unpaved roads, some off road.
Did the ORM and EHM and it works. Yesterday I installed the Provent and the SAMCO hoses. The old hoses (which I suspect were replaced in the first 20K miles) were remarkably clean. I have not yet installed the SEGR.
You will read more about some simple fixes and some more expensive enhancements. But the basic vehicle is remarkable, you can have mine when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

Yakers, I looked at the blog for your Artic trip. Wow, very well done and an exceptional advertisement for the Liberty. Maybe you could get Jeep to sponsor you
