the AFV started making a noise while engine was running. I have had the butterfly stuck closed in times past causing a no start condition. But this time thankfully, the butterfly is stuck open. Engine starts and runs and produces normal power but still the noise is louder than the engine running and hood down. I have cleaned the throat and butterfly several times before because my wife has been stranded because the butterfly failed to reopen after normal engine shutdown. The valve motor chatter was very annoying so the plug has been off for a week with a CEL glaring at me. Now I decided to remove the valve and investigate. I opened the crimped on side plate to discover four teeth from adjacent gears stripped clean off. I could run like this for a awhile though I want a new valve. Where can I find this valve?? my local Jeep dealer quoted me $371!!

just remove the butterfly plate and be done with it, all the FCV does it help prevent a little shut down shudder when you turn the engine off.

Mines been disabled for over a year now. No problems.

the FCV is like the appendex of the CRD.

Without the FCV as you call it, you can't flow enough EGR. When the weather warms back up and the EGR is working, you'll set a code for EGR flow insuffient without the throttle working properly. And you'll have increased shake on shut down.

Well from what I understand on most diesel engines if you don't have a way of killing the air, you could have a "runaway engine" situation. (If fuel and/or oil were to be introduced into the intake).

So I would prefer the AFV to be functional...even though I'm running an SEGR. Appreciate the replies, but I'm still looking for a valve.

I believe they redesigned the valve and replaced the craptastic plastic gears that broke with metal gears.

Your best bet is to get the part number from the dealer and buy it online from an online dealer like moparpartsamerica or wholesalemopar or the like. It will probably still run you between $200-$250. Good luck.

If you can wait until after the new year holiday I think i can get it for you cheaper than $200.

I will try again on some of those suggestions. My first try yesterday was fruitless. MrMopar, as for waiting I am a GO. as I said, thankfully she runs! I'm just running with no protection

How much of a pain is it to replace the FCV?

I just replaced the FCV on my 05 and it is not difficult at all. Once you remove the CAC hose
there are 4 bolts that hold it together. It took me about an hour, but I was'nt trying to set
any speed records. I did remove the battery to give me a bit more room to work.

Be interesting to note how many of these failed in winter temps, possibly from moisture freezup

tried another DCJ dealer I found on E-bay. same quote as before $371 cheez-its!! I hope DCJ does fold  This Liberty has been nothing but MAJOR arse pains for me. There, I'm better now. so, on I search for another option.

And as for the freezing up issue....I theorize my issue stems from the associated crud build-up and past stuck closed no start conditions I experienced. Those craplastic gears don't like to be forced. it was probably doomed from that point regardless of how much I cleaned the throat after. Can anyone suggest a junkyard source??

Yep - that's hallchryslerjeep, and they didn't list the FCV for this auction period - now that I look, seems like it was around 2 bills, or so - EGR is 170bucks
