I guess they don't build these Jeeps to handle the sun anymore. My rear bumper guard ( don't know what else to call it ) that fits on top of the bumper and was originally black has now faded to a crappy grey colour. I've applied just about everything that's designed for bumpers , even your fancy Meguiars stuff don't work |

I had a lot of fading on the fenders on my TJ, haven't had the KJ long enough to really notice but I park it in the shade when at work which seems to help and a good once a month carwash w/ SPF... At least they advertise it who knows if it does much of anything. The biggest complaint I have about mine is since it's white above the windsheild and the rear window/talegate area is nearly impossible to get clean (white again) |

You'll need to buff the plastic to remove the surface oxidation so the paint will adhere, clean, apply black paint, which will prevent eventual UV deterioration to the point of cracking and crumbling\powdering - otherwise, automatic transmission fluid brings out a darker color, keeps it fresh and shiny, like the tire sidewalls after using that tire stuff - the natural color is dark gray - got a complete set waiting to go on this limited KJ, which had the dk green body-color sprayed-on as part of that optional package - needles to say, the clear-coat is bubbling up and peeling off, leaving the dull body color exposed - same on the front and rear bumpers - got new KJ Renegade flares, with exposed rivets, for a huskier, more manly-appearing KJ |

Again with the el cheapo automatic trans fluid, just scrub'em well with hot soapy water and rinse, let dry, lube'em down - any dirt left on'em is just gonna look like well-oiled dirt - other than that, it's armor-all xtreme tire shine, and such |

Don't feel that you are alone in this, I just noticed that mine is really faded too. Dang sun damage! But I'm thinking that an ARB or other custom bumper is in my future, and I like the idea of the Renegade flares. Those sound cool. For the rear... It will have to be a paint job eventually, or a rhino lining. |

Yea, that technique is perfect for restoring the "brand-new" look... B/c you are VERY likely to scorch it, and then have to go GET a brand new one. I've used heat guns on plastic before for curing scratches in clear plastic... The difference between smoothing out the scratches and suddenly having a yellow burn mark is VERY subtle. Its HARD to get it perfect. |

....and it will look black I had an old pre-TDI Jetta before I bough my CRD. I used a product called, "Back to Black" made by Mothers. I did work at removing the surface oxidation but make sure you don't get any on your paint, it is a pain to clean off. It lasted more than a year and then I sold the car. http://www.autogeek.net/motbactrimca.html |
