| Post subject: | transmission trouble |
ok. i am in TX and the last few days we have been having some cool weather. I got in the jeep two days ago to go to wal mart and the transmission wan't shfting right. it wasn't shiftin into overdrive. i pulled over to the shoulder and put it in park, then shifted back down to drive, pushed the overdrive off button to make sure it wasn't engaged even though it wasn't showin on the instrument cluster. when i pushed the button the light came on so i pushed it again and it went off. Then i took off again and was still havein trouble goin into overdrive. every other gear would shift fine. after a couple miles down the road it all of a sudden went to shiftin right. then it did it again yesterday and this mornin. i think i just need to go have it serviced. am i wrong? or could this mean something else? |

You mean it only shifts to 3rd? Remember the CRD transmission has 2 overdrive gears, 4th and 5th gear. Maybe your having trouble with the torque converter clutch engaging. Best to have a scan tool hooked up to be sure what gear it's in and if the torque converter supposed to be engaged. Oh make sure engine is warmed up or won't shift last gear anyway. |

Cold weather will make that happen sometimes. The tranny has to come to temp before ODs work...as a safety feature. |

it won't shift into overdrive while the transmission is cold - it has to warm up. |

.....I will drive up to 8 miles on the Trollway before mine shifts into fifth over drive. Before my PML extra deep pan, it only took up to Six miles, must be the extra oil in the pan has to heat up. |

Completely normal. The tranny generates very little heat when in overdrive so the TCM makes it stay out of lockup until the fluid is warm enough for correct line pressure. |
