Just changed the fuel filter.

The "in tank fuel pump" is great for purging the air from the filter.
Hard to imagine the pain in the arse this mundane task would be without it.

Also... removing the whole filter assembly (two nuts at the firewall) makes the filter change easy.

The lift pump is well worth the effort.

Thanks Diesel LOST forum !

I did mine a few months back and opened the brass bleeder valve I installed (with a plastic tube into a bottle). Turned the key to "on" and waited for the bottle to start filling with diesel, then pour the bottle back into the tank and DONE. I almost can't remember how much of a PITA it was before the pump. Kinda like after having a child: What was it like not to be a parent? Can't remember :)

Last time I spun the filter off from underneath with a band filter which used a long 3/8" ratchet extension. When you removed the two nuts, does the assembly lift up enough to remove the filter without disconnecting the fuel lines? Or must that be done too?

YES  And it's easy to get the wire off the water in fuel sensor too

I just changed my filter also (50k on the CRD) and was able to do it from above after disconnecting the two electrical connectors plus the water in fuel sensor. I think the trick is to follow the instructions and install it hand tight. As for the "pain in the arse" about priming the filter it wasn't that difficult. Just 10-15 pumps, then start the engine. It ran a few seconds then died. 10-15 more pumps and it started and ran fine. NEVER opened the bleeder valve. I guess i'm lucky I don't have many of the problems others have.

I just found this in my FSM...so I already have one? That's new to me..

This is supposed to sit inside the fueltank. And my '02 has an access cover in the trunk (according to the FSM).

he's got the 2.5 with Racor style fuel head - MrMopar64 said those had a lift pump

(of course I've never seen one - but it sounds reasonable)
