Post subject:  StarScan / DBRIII

Hi Guys

I had my CRD at the dealer recently and they used their Starscan to scan my ECU that has an error P0610 that is active and cannot be cleared. The dealer informed me that the PCM is faulty and needs to be replaced although she is running and behaving normally at the moment. The dealer said that the PCM probably has a faulty circuit and that further deterioration was imminent with the possibility of serious damage if related to the management of injectors etc.

The dealer said that i have two options, replace the PCM or if you know of someone connected to Bosch, try and see if you can import one, they will program the VIN for me and i would save some pennies with a risk of it not working on my vehicle.

The PCM is only available from the dealer so well done to Bosch and DC for closing the door on me as a Jeep owner and they can charge whatever they want to.

They also claim that a used PCM is unprogrammable due to a security code.

So that brings me to the following questions;

1/ Is a Starscan the same as a DBRIII.

2/ Can a used PCM be programmed with my VIN as i am able to source a used one with the same part number.

3/ Is it true that i need to access the four digit code from the dealer when attempting to reflash or programming my VIN on a used PCM.

4/ Using a performance tuner without wanting to mention any names on this forum, can clone my ECU and program a used ECU but then i run the risk that it may not work on my Euro model.

5/ Any other options guys........

Yours in Jeeping.

Not true

Starscan is the newer system, the DRBIII is the older, the DRBIII does not support CAN bus, but does support the PCI.

Yes.

I have no idea what this 4 digit code is, I think they may be referring to the SKIM code, but that would be completely reset along with the vin.

They may be referring to the Motorola security code in the CPU that guards the kernel, which is the basic housekeeping that determines engine, transmission, or etc management - the passcode prevents copying the uprocessor firmware, or reverse-engineering for illegal duplication\modification - the Flash\reflash accesses the interfacing firmware in flash memory, but cannot access that core memory area

Or, they could be referring to the SKIM\SKREEM stuff - sounds like they're just unfamiliar with the CRD system - basic ECM R&R procedures are in the FSM

IIRC, Starscan is VIN-driven, has no entry option for '05 KJ CRD VIN, so won't talk to '05 KJ CRD - '05 and '06 are hybrid communication systems, using PCI and CAN busses - '05 is RWAL braking and auto trans on PCI - '06 is 4W-ABS with torque-sense on PCI and CAN, auto trans on PCI - Starscan has '06 VIN option - I didn't even look for '06 VIN in DRBIII
