I am now into miles past the extended warranty (70k) that was thrown in when I bought the CRD new. Other than the recalls and a few minor issues, I have had no problems with my Jeep. In fact, I have never had to even use the extended waranty at all. It is stock except for tires and an added tranny skid plate.

So, my question is: can the Jeep be trusted? I don't know about Libertys, in general, having a good/bad rep for lasting over time, plus the fact that trying to even find someone to work on the diesel who knows what he is doing may also be an issue.

I can do simple repairs, but anything major will be beyond my capability. Should I keep the Jeep, or punt?

I intend to punt when I reach the end of my 90K warranty. I can't risk paying for a turbo or trashed tranny from a grenaded TC out of pocket.

My plan is to get 500,000 out of mine (at 70,000 now) - but I don't mind working on it -

the only thing that's made me nervous is geordi's turbo/engine fail.

but even a new engine would be cheaper than a new Jeep, and I've already have the Suncoast

and personally there's nothing else out there that I'd like to drive

- now if Jeep comes up with a street legal J8 - that could change things - but not the current stock

Just keep it and drive it.

You can pay for a lot of maintenance when you don't have a car payment. Besides vehicles are not investment, they are an expense. Lower your expenses drive a paid for vehicle.

I keep vehicles for at least 10 years, but I'm keeping this one forever. I'll do whatever maintenance is necessary to keep it on the road or at least until I can get a diesel JK for a reasonable price.

If you can't work on it I would punt.

She's as dependable as anything else out there....Probably MORE so.
Besides, something blows or falls off, all the boys and girls here can help you get it back together.
Now with that said...You want to start over with some new ride that has worse issues ??? Keep in mind the auto builders are all
bankrupt, using parts from bankrupt suppliers, building government (bankrupt also by the way) mandated designed vehicles, and being sold & serviced by bankrupt dealers.

Don't get me wrong. The CRD is the most sure footed rig I have ever owned. I usually only own a car for 3 years before trading it in. The Jeep is 3+ years now. There are more high dollar POTENTIAL problems with it though. My other car is a 2007 Mustang GT. I will probably go back to a truck in 3 years when the CRD will go. If it wasn't for the rapid depreciation of the CRD, it may have been gone now like Old Navy and others have done.

Keep it. In 10 years it will be worth more in parts than as a full vehicle as the rest of us try to keep ours running.

I'm just wondering how many transmissions you can buy each year if you set aside your car payment money into a general "car fund".

Buying a new car has never made sense to me financially. It seems to be a luxury purchase to me, which is fine. But if you're doing it to save money I think you're fooling yourself.

New car purchases are never a good idea financially. They loose 1/4 of their value real quick, unless it is a CRD. Then it looses it's value overnight. A new tranny is what????? $3000 installed. So yea, save up the car payment money for that rainy day if you are pinching pennies. I will alway have a car payment. That's just the way I roll. I figure if I always have a car payment, might as well be driving a new car. The good news is I filled up last night and I got 26.5 mpg on the last tank of all highway driving. They must be back on summer fuel now.

Sir Sam is right - just drive it!
My only vehicles now in my driveway are turbo diesels and are DD's.
As long as you keep in mind these powertrains are different/ better than average gasser four banger junk.
Remember to:
Turbo cooldown every time before power shutdown and you will never have to pay for a new turbo.
Change the filters regularly as part of maintence - oil, fuel, air and you will never have to worry about engine relacement.
When timing belt time comes, replace that belt system complete.
Every 30K do the two filters and use AT+4 oil in that trans and your 545rfe will last many miles.
F37 is bad but if you got it complete an upgraded TC/ oil pump is in there and that is piece of mind.

And drive it like you stole it every now and then- These diesels love it and are built for it- cleans out intake, exhaust and turbo innards for the better- show some soot every now and then.

My plan is 300.000 miles for both the CRD and my wife's TDI- we are both at 68K now and loving every mile!

I don't get the 'loses value overnight' or 'rapid depreciation of the CRD'

if you check NADA values

CRD's are consistently worth 2000 more than the comparable gasser.

and the Diesel package was initially a 2800 option - as automotive things go - that a pretty good return.

My comment was based on a sticker of $26K down to $10-11K in 3 years. That's over $5K a year. Pretty steep.

I have followed car price depreciation for years.

It is a big scam to: 1) Make more money for dealers and 2) Lower replacement costs and repair costs of Insurance companies.

Lets face it they are both out to $crew you.

Factor this into your management decision as well, as a vehicle gets older repair costs are cheaper because more are competing to sell parts and service.

I've lost $12,000 in 7 months on the CRD, that's steep. $5,000 a year is nearly nothing, I expect that kind of loss on the TDI at the moment. That means it's worthless when 5 years have passed since my purchase :D

We do have a slightly higher vehicle tax over here (50% for VANs and 180% for passenger cars) so we should probably be comparing hamburgers instead :D

Yea, in 3 years I may have to just give it away. May have to drive it until it quits, then park it out back.

There are a lot of older Jeeps on the road and dedicated to off road only use.
Jeep owners don't give up and adopt the throw away mind set.
Look around and you will see.
