Ok Im trying to understand if and or why a Provent is BETTER than a straight elephant hose. I understand the EH because I have one on my TDI Jetta. Why (if) is a Provent is better better? I dont care about the smell, or oil on the floor. Now, if a Pro is better why?

Thanks.

I care about the smell and Elephant hose stinks.

however you said you don't so

the only other thing I can think of - is if there's a visual inspection as part of an emissions test EHM would fail
- don't even know if such a thing exists - it would probably be a California thing if it was.

Mot of the peeps who have never had the unique pleasure of visiting the CRD forum will not know what you're asking. I've done neither in my CRD.

I've been running the elephant hose and yes, it did stink..

So I ran a longer hose outside the jeep and now it's zip-tied to my left rock rail. It just puffs smoke out there now and the smell went away.

I'm amazed how much crap builds up in that hose. I had to change it once already because the gunk actually clogged the hose

Could this catch can be utilized at the end of the EHM hose? The manufacturer said the could supply straight brass fittings for the 3/4" hose. Would this eliminate the smell?

Why is this even a question, the elephant hose is illegal in most of the civilised world (due to the release of combustion blowby gases into the atmo), Provent is not as the gases are returned for reburning (as the engine emission system was designed - but without the oil).

Provent is better because something like the first 80% of pollution reduction achieved in the last 42 years is due to the blowby being routed into the intake. Plus it is legal.

You know that wreckmobile ahead of you, belching clouds of blue smoke, everybody hates it because it stinks, it pollutes like crazy, and you will be joining that vehicle, just without quite so much fully visible smoke, but with nearly as much pollution.

I have a MANN/Hummel Provent, same that everyone uses. I have it draining to a SEALED catch can with a drain valve. IIRC, there is the additional advantage from keeping the crank case under a vacuum. You should have less windage losses, less oil seepage, less pollution, better ring sealing. This is of most benefit to forced induction applications, for the obvious reasons. The gains may be very marginal, even imperceptible. All the vacuum from the turbo induction is probably why the stock CCV is not affective. Why throw away all those benefits?

Cheers,
Erik

I tried 'em both.

The EHM smoked and dripped.

I like the Provent solution.

So Joe, you get to reap the fruits of my research. The Provent works like a champ.

Chad, have you ever changed the provent filter? If not I guess I should get one. Someplace.

I have cleaned the filter. No need to replace it unless it has holes in it or something.

I think the filter would probably last MANY miles if you remove it and clean it every now and then.

Provent is gonna be better, but the EHM is a quick easy cheap way to get about the same results.

There wasn't any smell associated with mine, but there was a good deal of smoke.

Good thing for all the pollution, it helped us all avoid that ice age the experts told us was coming in the 70's.

When I was a child they terrified us by saying we were going to freeze to death; now they are terrifying todays children by telling them they will all to burn to death.

P.S.

I still believe the Earth will freeze before it burns.

Well, JL, I have been to central China, where they are just starting to worry about the glaciers receding in the Himalayas. Most of the water in the Yangtze and Yellow rivers is glacier melt from those glaciers, and it is a scary thought what would happen to the 3/4 or so of the Chinese population when/if that water goes away. And worse, what would happen to everyone else if those folks started to migrate to escape the drought.

I have also been on the west coast of South America, where an astonishing amount of the food you eat is now grown smack in the middle of one of the driest deserts on this planet (it has NEVER rained there in the nearly 500 years since the Spanish started keeping records) and ALL the water comes from receding Andean glaciers. So, IMHO, burn is currently more likely.

I am reminded of the immortal words of Solomon Short: "You can believe anything you want; the universe is not obligated to keep a straight face."

I am always amazed at the myopic view of things some have. Let's see... 11,000 Jeep Liberty CRD's with only a handfull of them with a elephant hose mod. A few hundred thousand semi trucks with 13-15 litre engines manufactured from 03-06 with the crankcase vented out to the open air by the manufacturers. I am not convinced that the OHM on the CRD is an issue.

My '06 Intl 9400i with a 15 litre Cummins engine is operating 140,000 miles a year with an average mpg around 6.8 mpg. That engine was designed (and given the EPA blessing) with the equivalent of the elephant hose mod. I really don't have any problem doing it to my CRD.

Well said CP. My feelings exactly. We here in the United States. ruled by political correctness can do all the touchy feely wacko enviro friendly crap we want and it won't matter a darn thing as long as China. India and Russia exist! Because their bands aren't tied behind their backs with all this bullpoop. They are polluting away and there isn't anything anyone here will ever be able to d about it! Ive been over there working at nuclear power plants. Our watermelon ideology is going to hurt us!!!
