| Post subject: | Water leak behind dash |
I noticed a "funky" smell (like old wet socks) in the Jeep a while back but didn't think anything of it. The smell did not go away for a few weeks. Then I noticed the carpet under the drivers side front floor mat was totally soaked with water. I also found that an envelope on the dash would get wet (during rain) if it was slipped between the dash top trim piece and the windshield. I checked the drains on the sunroof - they are clear and not leaking. Not sure what to check next. Anyone else ever dealt with this before? Jeep is a 2005 Liberty Sport CRD with sunroof. Thanks! |

Heater core. Bust out the long dollars to fix it. I believe the whole dash comes out to get to it. |

More likely your evap drain is plugged. Find the drain hose on the firewall and unplug it. If it is the heater core it would leak coolant and usually that coolant would go out your evap drain. |

Evap pan will not result in lost coolant but it will smell, sometimes like mold or mildew. |

The smell of leaking coolant could never be mistaken for old wet socks. X2 evap pan drain is plugged. |

Your windshield could be leaking also. Musty smell is normal after using a/c or defrost for the first couple minutes. It should go away though. They make a anti-bacterial/deodorizing spray. You run the hvac motor on high and spay it into the intake. It works but it's not permanent. |

I think it might be your sunroof leaking. Is your Jeep parked on a slanted uphill or downhill driveway? My sunroof leaked into the cargo area when parked pointing uphill. Took it to the dealer 4 times but he could not get it fixed. Had him take out the headliner and took it home , parking the Jeep under a sprinkler I could not get it to leak with the headliner removed. When I inspected the head liner I noticed the headliner was smashing all four drain lines so much that it left an impression on the styrofoam. I heated a pipe with a torch and melted a channel into the stryrofoam of the headliner. This gave the drain lines enough room. I hasn't leaked since. On the front corners of the sunroof gutters I noticed that the gutter had to be notched for the pop-up air deflector. This allowed water that leaks past the sunroof gasket to escape the gutter system and flow across the surface of the headliner and into your roof upright supports . I originally thought that this is where my leak was coming from and it could be the cause of your leak as well. I removed the air deflector as I don't think it is of any use anyway and I made a dam out of epoxy putty to repair the gutter dam wall. This stopped about 50% of my water leak. |

I think the top of my windshield is leaking. I was able to re-create the problem when I poured water at the top of the drivers side windshield. I am thinking that a glass/windshield place can re-seal it for me? |

I had a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 that developed a terrible water leak a little over 16 months into ownership; it ended up being a leak around the cowl area. My selling dealer was great and replaced the entire carpet and padding. Greg |

| Post subject: | It was the Windshield Seal |
There was a "gap" in the windshield seal in the upper drivers side corner. It was letting rainwater come in and run down the A-Piller, behind the dash and onto the drivers side carpet. $125 later and I have a nice new (clear) windshield, no more leak and no more "wet socks!" |
