A few weeks ago my wife and I took a day trip to hit some of the back road in the smoky mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. While heading up a pretty steep and long gravel road, the Jeep started reading hot, turned on the heat and brought her back to normal, and on the way down it cooled down. 30 would have been my max speed, and probably averaged 20 or less for close to an hour. I know of TSB 08-043-05: Engine Temperature Gauge - Indicator Reads A Higher Temperature Than Actual OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves reprogramming the instrument cluster control (CCN) module. SYMPTOM/CONDITION: The customer may notice that the engine temperature gauge may indicate that the engine temperature is high. In hot ambient temperatures, and under certain driving conditions of extended uphill driving while towing a trailer, the engine temperature indicator may indicate slightly above the 3/4 normal operating temperature mark on the temperature gauge (but below the engine hot temperature markings). This condition may be caused by an incorrect calibration of the of the engine temperature gauge. I am pretty sure that this is what it is, but just want to get your guys thoughts, because we are taking my wifes parents out for the day Saturday and will probably hit this road, and a few others. |

What year? If it's an 06 i would say your normal, if it's an 05, i would say, clean your stacks? Basically as stated by others, the crd has a pretty good way of dealing with overheating, you were not overheating, you would know it, reduced power (like limp mode) The inability to operate the ac, and also a chime, you would know. You can do a search on testing the mechanical fan clutch, there seems to be several methods. |

I have the same issues when I drive on roads out here. Going to put a trans cooler in this summer. |

I had the high reading temp gauge early on with my '05. The TSB was done by dealer and no problems since. I have been on the same road in about the same air temp a number of times since the fix and have not seen the gauge go above 12 noon. |

FYI - KeighJeigh also had a long slow driveway drive and overheating - he had an 05 his wife had an 06 - side by side the 05 fan ran slower - he changed the fan clutch and it improved cooling. |

I have pulled my 18’ boat to the lake a few times now, and my 05 CRD temps go right up to the top. It’s 100*+ here in Phoenix now, and it don’t like it when it’s pulling something heavy. I ordered a new fan clutch (from moparpartsamerica) as many have stated that a lot of 05’s had defective fan clutches. Now when I start it and drive, you can hear the fan! I have never heard it before. Next, to the lake for a little test run. Do the fan clutch first! |

I had the same problem on my 05. Gauge would read high on any extended uphill grade in temperatures from the 70's on up and towing in summer heat. The clutch fan was replaced under warranty in Spring 05 but that had no impact. When Jeep discovered the calibration issue later that year I had it reprogrammed and that fixed the problem. Now the only circumstance when the gauge goes over normal is extended towing uphill grades in summer heat. Otherwise the gauge stays put a little below mid range on the guage. |

I was just cruising on the interstate today at 70 degrees and mine was constantly hot, not even towing anything, It never used to do that, could it still be a badly calibrated gauge? Here is a video I took with my phone: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1017369/05142009037.mp4 Does anyone have the link to the gauge running hot TSB? I have an appointment at the dealership tomorrow and would like to print it out. |
