When I don't drive the CRD for a few days or more, it seems that the engine is cranking more than usual before it starts. This only happens after a few day delay. Once started and run, the following starts are exactly like I have come to expect.

The battery is fine, the glow plugs seem to be working based on the dash light, I get no codes, and the engine drives fine & gets good mpg.

Any suggestions?

did you check for air in the fuel head? or the actual voltage of the battery after a few days of sitting, you might have a small drain.

check fuel head for air, also when did you last change fuel filter? The filter assembly area is the most likely cause, followed by the glow plugs.

You need to update your sig line. We have no way of knowing whether you have a lift pump, which would rule out air in the filter head.

Two areas of concern:

Leaking fuel filter head = heater plug or priming pump

Deteriorated oem red-top or lead-acid battery not holding charge due to normal security alarm and other module drain - if battery voltage is reduced, as from sitting several days, engine will take longer to start.

F.e., #2 son replaced slow-starting gel-cell with lead-acid, restored starting - when driven every day, KJ starts well - KJ sits for several days, slow starting resumes - replaced lead acid with new red-top gel-cell, KJ starts well whether driven regularly or left sitting for a week, measured pre-start voltage is always higher than with the lead-acid
