| Post subject: | Well, Well, another issue on my CRD. Need HELP again!!! |
It seems almost like my CRD can read the calendar. The second day of this month I hear a grinding noise coming from passenger side of the engine block after shutting down the beloved VM engine after my EGR went out three month ago, my passenger side speaker went out two month ago, and my turbo inter cooler hose went out last month. I have SEGR mod, three months ago with remapping by inmotion. Installed Samco hoses last month. Have NOT installed Prevent mod yet. The grinding noise occurs and is most obvious after I shut down the engine, it grinds 4-6 times before it stops. It also occurs when the engine in running and when the gear is in P and N. It stops when I shift to R or D. I did not receive any error code or CEL with the SERG in position. I receive the CEL if I put the by-pass module on saying the infamous EGR value issue (it was there before I did the SEGR mod, so I know that I have a broken/carboned-up EGR value. Can someone help me on this issue, please? I do not want to take it the steallership, they has not refunded me for changing the wrong parts last month before I putting on the Samco (another long story that I will share some day). I live near King of Prussia, PA. Is there any member who lives near my area whom I can meet in person to seek for help. I am getting tired with my CRD. With my 4-month-old son, I do not have much time to deal with my CRD. Well, I do feel pretty good now a days when I fill up with diesel at a lower price than Gasoline and knowing I am getting better MPG than all the 3.7L out there. Thank you in advance for the valuable points that I am going to receive from you. |

It is most likely the EGR flow control valve. It is a little motor operated valve on the driver's side of the engine. The hose from the intercooler connects to it. The noise you are hearing is the little plastic gears grinding. Take off the intercooler hose and if the valve is in the open position, unplug it and go on with your life... |

Thanks 704. Doesn't the SEGR Box disable the EGR? Pin 5 is not connected. So, my EGR motor should not receive any power, isn't it? ?????? |

The FCV I believe is what he's referring to. it connects to the CAC hose on the DS. |

The SEGR allows the Flow Control Valve to operate on shutdown. It would make sense to hear it grinding if the gears are stripped even with the SEGR installed. |

It sounds logical. I will try to change the FCV. Is it hard to change? Does anyone know the part number? Thanks again. |

5142799AA is the part number for the EGR flow control valve. Some have reported a "CH" prefix in front of that part number. There are gaskets too, but I can't find part numbers right now. Compared to the actual EGR valve, the flow control is pretty easy to change. Remove the hose, unplug the valve, and remove the four bolts that attach the valve. |

Take a look at this thread for some pics... http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... p?p=372096 DZL_LOU did a great thread on the EGR Flow Control Valve a (long) while back, but I can't seem to find it now. Seems like the link is dead. The link below is from the tech section and it seems to be dead. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=13215 I found the link above in the thread below: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=24961 under CRD emissions components, third from the top. I wonder if the thread got lost when the site crashed a while back? It's a shame if it is gone because it had some really good info... |

Just move some wires out of the way, maybe remove your battery if you want the elbow room. Unplug the FCV, remove the end of the intercooler hose from it, and there are 4 bolts that hold it on. The gasket is an o-ring and is reusable. Regarding your original post, the FCV is on the DRIVER'S side of the engine block. So if you're sure you hear the noise on the passenger side, it's not the FCV. |

The flow control valve or 'throttle' temporarily closes on engine shut down to starve the engine of air and reduce the engine shake during key off. Anyone ever hear a Cummins pickup give a big sqeak when it shuts off? Same concept, the engine can actually rotate backwards slightly as the pressure generated last compression stroke overcomes the rotating inertia of the engine (which is stopping-remember) and brings the rotating to a quick halt. The squeak is the acc drive belt complaining about rapid changes in acceleration. |
