Post subject:  Corrosion on Jeep Wheels?

I took my Jeep over to the tire shop for rotation and was told that I needed to bring the car back at 25 and 500 miles after the rotation for a torque check on the lugs. I have just under 60k on the tires and have been to the tire place at least 7 times for the free rotation, but this is the first time I was ever asked to bring it back for torque checks.

I asked the tech about the torque check and was told that it was new company policy to do the check on all Jeeps due to known corrosion problems on Jeep vehicles which could lead to loosening of lugs. I asked if it applied to all Jeeps and/or what kind of wheels (steel-alloy) were involved, but he just said it was their policy to do this on all Jeeps regardless of model or wheel type. This store (Town Fair Tire) is a large muliti-store chain in New England and since the rotation and torque check are free I don't know how they could gain anything.

Has anyone else heard of a problem with Jeep wheels?

Well partially what he told you is do do. That's the part about jeep

The real deal is it's always been necessary to retorque mag wheels after say 100 miles on all cars. It's in your owner's manual. But people don't read that little gem and a wheel might fall off. Then it's a blame game. So the tire store must have been sued because of a mag wheel comming off a customer's car. I'm on a travel trailer group and people have started putting on fancy mag rims and a couple have lost wheels and the game starts. "They didn't know they needed rechecked" My crd's wheels don't have corrosion on them but the ones on my 00 XJ (cherokee) have some on the inside where they meet the brake drums/discs. It can happen on new wheels or corroded ones.

Think they can tell the torque on the lug nuts by how many jerks the impact wrench makes.

Some shops have those special sockets that look like torsion bars so the Bean Counters think they are tightening up the wheels properly.

Let me be totally honest: most of it is do to Break Time or Lunch Time before they are finished and they FUR GET Ba For they get back and drive out with the lug nuts finger tight, if you are lucky.

Pure CYA.

Yep. It's industry wide also. Trucks, trailers, cars, ect. It's also printed on most service invoices. They know your not going to check them after 100 miles.
