Post subject:  thinking of buying a CRD and first jeep

I am thinking of trading in my subaru outback for a jeep liberty. I want something that can tow than the outback more and gets good MPG. the CRD liberty seens to be a good fit. I am just not sure what to look for and what problems these guys might have that I may not know of. they only made it 2 years so that has me concerned some about parts and repairs. Any help comments and sugestions would be great.

Thanks

Do it! The CRD is basically an excellent vehicle, with just a few minor problems that may or may not pop up now and again. A lot depends on how you maintain the vehicle over time... much can be prevented by just a few easy steps.

As for the CRD being manufactured for only 2 years... Many of the non-engine parts are identical to those in the gasser (patooie!). Engine parts aren't hard to find either.

Its two-year lifespan was due to the EPA (grr), not the CRD... These babies were flying off the lots before the EPA got uptight in 2007.

Actually this engine family started appearing in Chrysler products in 1992 in the Cherokee in the rest of the world. There was also a Diesel powered Dakota, Town and Country to name a couple off tht top of my head. VM diesels are still being used in Jeeps and othr Chrysler products in the rest of the world.

Go to this site and check "current" and "past" vehicles and choosing the different brands of each. You'll be supprised. Then in "others" you'll see a familiar brown truck

Do it, particularly if you find one at a good price. If you are someone who takes an active interest in the well-being of your vehicle, you will not be disappointed. There is more than enough knowledge on this forum to get you through most anything.

However, if you're a "put-gas (patooie!)-in-it-and-go" kind of person, you may be dismayed by some of its idiosyncracies.

This may be a bold statement, but I will make it anyway: It's not so much whether the CRD is right for you, it's whether you are right for the CRD. . .

Post subject:  wow thanks for all the positive replys

I found a jeep I plan to go look at this friday. problem is its 60 some miles away so I need to do it on a day off and that will be friday if all goes well. what I found is a limited with less than 30k on it. its a 2006 and the asking price seems good. weather or not I get it will be depending on if its still there when I get there and what I can pull for the Outback on trade. I realy don't want a payment that is much bigger and can not doe negative equity but if I can get the deal to work out it looks like I'm going for it.

I do have a question about warranty that was offered on them. I know they had a 3year bumper to bumper and the deal told me it had 2 months of that left but was there a powertrain warranty also, like say 7years/70,000 miles?

as to the kind of owner I am.... I like to be somewhat envoled with the car and taking care of it as best I can. I do have periods where I get busy for weeks at a time and I tend to be gas and go for a while then I come back and clean it out, check it over and all. I have done some of my own work in the past with cars. stuff like filter and oil changes even tune-ups and brakes. once I tackled a head gasket with some help but I doubt I will try that again. with the cars I have had I always changed the oil myself or had it changed every 3000 miles and tires rotated every other oil change. overall I guess I am not the worst car owner.

its looks like this is going to be a unique vehicle and jeep owners seem to be loyal just like subaru owners..... BTW the outback is my second subie.

If you're buying it from a dealer, ask for all service records that they have on it in their database. Hopefully if it has a solid service history you can safely ( maybe :? ) assume that the dealer put the right oil in it.

What is your location and what is their asking price? Several L.O.S.T members have CRD's for sale that might could help you be relatively more comfortable with the history on.

I have an '06, and it was my understanding at the time of purchase that it only carried a 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty. They did away with the 7/70,000 warranty in 2005 I believe.

Oh yeah one more thing about the engine.

I hear its an italian made engine and in one place its design was credited to DalimerBenz then I see it menttioned here its been a chrysler sine the 90's what is true.

what routine things are required that are different with diesel compaired to gas (patooie) engines?

The engine is from VM Motori, an Italian engine-maker. Chrysler buys the engine for use in its vehicles much like GM buys the Duramax from Isuzu for its HD trucks. The engine is used in many applications, and is not specific to any one auto manufacturer.

Since purchasing mine, the only maintenance/ upkeep that I've had to do differently was changing the fuel filter. It is a pretty simple task though, and only needs to be done every 15,000 miles or so. Changing the oil is more expensive, as it requires 6.4 quarts of 0W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic oil, but the frequency of changes is longer than in a gasser so it balances out.

That sounds like a winner to me. At that price I would take a chance on the service history, if it has less than 36,000 miles. Mine is an '06 Sport; I bought it with 25,000 miles last September (when diesel was still over $4.00/ gal) for $11,995.

I spoke with a sales person on the phone about it today. they told me the jeep was owned by a chrysler employee and traded for a wrangler unlimited. I asked about any damage from acciedents and recalls. I was told there was none known but the jeep had been fully gone over by their service dept and all they added was a new battery. its has 26,000 miles on it now.

Was not designed by DB. The only connection is when the 05 and 06 CRD's were made Detroit Diesel that was then owned by DB had 48% interest in VM with the Pensky group holding 52% but not anymore.
Before the ecomony went belly up GM held majority (all?) interest but I'm not sure about now.

Chrysler has USED them since 1992 but did not own interest in them. I gave the link to the VM site above and if your interested spend some time there. US 05/06 CRD's use this engine.

So would any sane person even consider a CRD with 102k miles with a largely unknown history (05 Limited)? I am going to look at one at a dealership on Wednesday.

I am driving a perfectly good 05 Liberty Sport V6 with 86k that I would have to get rid of, but I have been fascinated with the CRD ever since I heard about them.

Thanks,

102k miles...........Just getting broken in :D
I'd be willing to bet the one with 102k miles gets better MPG than mine with 40k.More the merrier.
Just give it a good looking over and a thorough test drive.

There is an overwhelming amount of material on this website for a diesel newbie.

Is there anything especially important that I should look for?

The green pump

But seriously, I would suggest replacing the stock muffler with a straight pipe or straight pipe muffler and getting your ECU tuned by GDE (greendieselengineering.com). That should cumulatively improve your mileage around 5-6mpg... For offroading, you will have to ask other folks. If it's just a daily driver, the above is all that is really necessary.

won't that make the jeep much louder? I will be driving it as my only car. its got to be relaible enough to get me there daily with few trips to the shop for unplanned repairs.
